So I headed to the Dingle peninsula last weekend for a bit of diving and sightseeing it rained most of the way down not a good sign. Got a quick dive in on Friday evening I was looking for bass but the vis was bad and the only bass I seen were juveniles lots and lots of them must be a nursery area.
Saturday I headed to Anaschaul to look for Triggers but again the vis was very bad but I did see some funky cows see pics
. Abandoned the Triggers and went to look for Pollack instead this time in coolemore south on Chealy's recommendation you were bang on crystal clear water and a ridicously beautiful beach.
The swell was quite big and I had to fight through the surf to get to calmer water there was actually 4or5 people surfing the same beach. I worked my towards the cliffs and found some decent Pollack in the 3-5lb range I took 3 and a conger that was swimming by. The new 18mm bands make a big difference lots more power and range but still accurate spent two hours in the water getting tossed around by the waves hitting the cliffs going from 10m vis to zero with the oxygen bubbles. Saw tons of wrasse every color you could think of even a blueish one and one that easily topped 5lb. Its a stunning spot but very strong currents when the tide changes and not one for anyone who suffers from sea-sickness. Had a beautiful dinner that night of beer battered Pollack and chips from new spuds enough to feed everyone staying in the house.
Sunday I went back to Anaschaul but the vis was still brutal so turned around and went to Ventry to try for Bass the tide was on a full low when I arrived and despite a good hour or more of searching in 8m vis no Bass to be had lots of small Pollack with the odd decent one but I had my quota of them. On the way back in I had a look for Lobbies and found 2 holed up but couldn't extract them from there holes they just retreated into the darkness. I got out swearing revenge and shivering the warmest temp I recorded over the whole wknd was 13c mostly it was 12c and putting on and taking off a cold wet wetsuit in the driving rain was getting me down. Went out for dinner and pints that night as the Regatta was on in castlegregory great craic long night
. The following morning I returned to Ventry armed with a torch and lobster hook to do battle after a long tussle and gasping I had a nice lobbie with very blue leg joints I left the other one for another day and grabbed a gun. Despite searching all the stringweed still no Bass to be found but I did get a nice mullet which went ballistic when hit and I had to grab it quick for fear of losing it. The vis was a good 10m now and I saw what I'm pretty sure was a Golden Grey Mullet hiding in the kelp very bright yellow spot on the cheek and different mouth shape to a TLM.
The opposite side of the harbour had been blown out all wknd but I gave it a bash before heading home very choppy and bad vis finally found one bass hiding under a boulder but he was gone in a flash some things are just not meant to be. All in all a good weekend the weather was pants but I managed some fish and scoped out some other spots for next time.
