I went down there myself on Friday but the water looked a bit brown near the shore and I don't like the current there if I venture out too far. I tried the rocks at the east side of the harbour but only seen mullet and small juvenile wrasse. I only got out around 9pm.

Well this is interesting Flag Ship Scuba. I heard a shop in town was stocking guns and remembered Feargus saying to me a long time ago that this shop was considering it. Wonder what their bubble blowing customers make of it ? Nice to be able to get your hands on a piece of kit and try it out first especially masks.
Yup agree with you there, the belt for 35 yo yo's is a bit steep. My current mask is the Maxlux and I love it but I didnt pay that much for it. Might try and pop in soon to scope it out. I see the plans for the 18th are coming along looking forward to it.:friday
Bit of advice needed lads,
I've recently rediscovered my love of spear fishing ,and i can see myself doing alot more spearing from now on.
The problem is my gear,i need to upgrade a few things and need advice on a mask(that dosn't let in GLARE)
Proper fins ,i have a cheapish pair of Typhoons from my scuba days that murder my feet,
My gun is a Mundial competition,(that i shortened a few year back
),this leaves me with a kill range of about 8ft,what lenght gun would cover most Irish spearing situations ???and at what distances in good vis are ye shooting stuff at ??
Budget is tightish:waterwork,but i can wait till i have money as i like good gear ,and prefer to buy once than often.
Has anyone experience with the following, Mares liquidskin masks,Beuchat Marlin elite gun and Beuchat Competion fins.

first off, I wouldnt go near flagship. just my opinion. very bad experience there and a few guys i know said the same. Beauchat do great low vol masks. A good size gun would be 75-80 for irish waters. Omer all the way!! I have to xxv 75 and its great. dont listen to the cressi guys. they dont shoot enough fish to know what a good gun isrofl

I have a Cressi Geronimo Elite mimetic in 95cm because I like mainly to spearfish in open water, although like Johnnybuoy was say and well, a 75 to 80 (even 90) is the standard size for your daily routine gun, maybe 75/80 if you have low visibility or you like to surprise fish in small caves sections and between 85 to 100cm (as the most....) if you like open waters and getting then in the "waiting" tecnique.
I´m sure that Bobdonny will post something here really soon to support me...but that´s just a feeling
The best gun it will be always the gun that you will get used to it....then after that all the others guns that you will try will be....different...! I choose the gun usually if it would allow you to see in the best possible way all the spear line, from start to the very end, in order to shoot it the best "probably" line up.
Important for me is also to have a shaft guide and reel, even if you sacrifice a bit the mobility, it would be always be a gain in security.
The truth is that most of the guns in these day are really good and accurate, few years ago they were just a bit more complex in order to adjust to your shoot and getting that "perfect" line up.
Hi Andy dont know the other gear and I sell imersion so my judgement is a bit biased but while I normally like Mares I bought the liquiskin with the tinted lenses for the bright sun while I was in Spain. 1 when i got back to Irish waters I was diving blind and 2 more importantly I found the skirt and the rubber it was made of irritating on my face. Its kind of a matt silicone where as all the other masks I have used were more shiny/glossy which i find fine. The only other one I would caution on is the Cressi Minima great little mask for freedivng but maybe a little blinkered for spearing.

I love my cressi Comanche 75 and its the gun used by world champions.
But what pedro said... every other gun will be different...
I would love the geronimo elite and was going to get it if I hadn't seen the 90 rob allen for almost free.

Thanks for the input lads,staying with the gun,i have a shortish gun for low vis days with a kill distance of 7-10 ft ,which lets face it will get the most use with spearing in Ireland,its a Beuchat ,thats why i'm thinking of getting another Beuchat(maybe a Marlin ),if that makes sense,the Geronimo has also gotten a few mentions,considering i have a short gun ,what lenght should i get to compliment it ,i was thinking 85/90 ?And also whats the advantages of the carbon models ?

Carbon is strong and lasts longer and is light. Beauchat are a great gun. My next one will be a marlin.
Carbon is cool but, I am not at all keen on light weight guns anyway, all that happen is more recoil!
Carbon is strong but, I have never broken an ally gun or seen one bend with a factory fitted rubber.
Carbon scratches really easy too so I would not worry about buying a carbon model to much however - they are cool!

Managed a dive after work last night, very warm evening although abit overcast.
Viz was anything from 1m to a murky 3 to 4, tried a spot in East cork and lots of Bass and Mullet around so took I two for the pot,
not sure of the weight but they were a decent size.
It's great to see the quantity of fish we have around here, long may it last..

I got out last night as well, was in the water from 4pm to 8pm and like chealy found a big variance in the vis. Near the shore it was around 1-2 metres and very murky but 400 metres out it went up to 8 metres. Strange thing is the spot I was in is normally very good for bass...I didn't even see one. A few mullet were there, lots of very small wrasse, a good sized sea trout, but that was it. Where have all the flounder and bass gone?
