I was just reading a thread in the Training section and it struck me that I've met very few excellent all round freedivers.

The post was from Eric F (one of the 100m CW potentials), whose best DNF is 67m. Eric, you're an ex World record holder, and you've broken EIGHT minutes static. You modestly admit that you "suck at no fins" (karma to you - as if you need it), but how come your dynamic pbs aren't world class too?

I've competed with Rignani Lolli (88m CW) who made just 5 minutes static, and Carrera (90+ FI) who hit only 120m DWF. The winner of the last static competition I was in (6:35) made only 65m DWF.

How come?

Is there some evolutionary specialization that makes some people elite at certain niche disciplines and ordinary at others, or is techique and training vitally important.

I can understand that a dynamic specialist could have equalization problems, but not vice versa.

So, do you know any great all rounders??

Ciao

Al

The best all-round competing divers, no doubt Herbert & Martin.

Herbert:
150m DNF
200m DWF
98m CW
101m FI
8'27" static

Martin:
135m DNF (I think he only tried twice)
200m DWF
100m CW
102m FI
8'15" static

Mifsud and Stig Severinsen would be up there if either could equalize properly.

Stig
166m DNF
204m DWF
?70m CW
?FI
8'06" static

etc...

Not sure why I suck at dynamic, probably because I never practice it. My no fins technique sucks too, I'm not a very good swimmer in general.

from what i know Bevan is rapidly becoming a great all rounder also and deserves to be compared with Martin and Herbert.

150m DNF
90m CW
8min+ static...

Eric... i'm amazed that the most you've done in DNF is 67m! your potential must be at least double that distance!

mind you i probably wouldn't do much better these days. i haven't done a 50m+ dynamic (or 3min+ static) in nearly 2 years!... i hang my head in shame... :D

Alun,

Would you mind sharing your PBs with us? The article by Emma was great but did leave me wondering about your PBs

Thanks

Andy

hi

Im also amazed that ANYONE can find that they can dive deeper in total distance then they can swim horizontally. I mean Eric can dive 88m down which covers a total distance of 176m and thats whilst wasting air equalising etc. So in dynamic I woulda thought that to cover that same distance whilst not wasting air equalising etc would be much easier. At least for me thats what ive found. Though I wish I was in the opposite situation of being able to dive much deeper than my dynamic :(

cheers

Andy,

my PBs are nothing special so don't get too excited! :) i've been wishing i hadn't agreed to that article now....urhh :( that's enough limelight for me... now back into the shadows... :D

Andrew,

remember that Eric only swam about 115m of that 176m. he was motionless for a third of the total distance.

hi

Fair enough I forgot about the sinking part. But still what about the air wastage of equalising over that distance, in dynamic you dont waste any air at all equalising

cheers

How about Sebastien Murat?

190m DWF
105m CW
57m CWNF
?m FI
1.5 min static +100m DNF on FRC!
8min+ static
185m nolimit

I'm not realy sure about any of those numbers thogh...
