I've never been taught this but picked this trick up while scuba diving if I didn't have a hand free. I recently started using it for freediving.

What I sometimes do is hold my tongue to the roof of my mouth and try to forcefully exhale without letting any air out. I'll get a whining or squeaking sound when I do this. Doesn't always work but don't use it very often.

After re-reading the Fattah Frenzel (could only get the text) I want to re-define what it is that I think I'm doing. When I say that I'm holding my tongue to the roof of my mouth it seems that I'm holding the back of my tongue to the back of the hard palate which feels right but apparently isn't. I When I try to move further back to the soft palate I'm almost gagging and feels like I'm swallowing my tongue. Does that sound right? I'm also a little dizzy working on this but guess that will pass. When this is done correctly should I be getting a squeaking or whining sound every time? Hope I'm on the right track. :(

Sounds more like straining REALLY hard to accomplish BTV, which can actually be done with almost no force at all provided you are relaxed enough.

Sounds to me like you are doing something similar but not quite getting it right. I recommend you practice practice practice, and to make sure you are using frentzel empty your lungs ENTIRELY and attempt to do the frentzel.... you should still be able to do it.

Thanks.

Can someone post the link to the Frenzel Fattah method? I came across it a long time ago but didn't find the link on his home or during a search. :)

What's BTV?

to me frenzel came ery easily, I didn't know what it was called, in order to do the frenzel, in laymans terms just plug your nose and fill your mouth with air, close the entrance to your lungs and push the air in your mouth upwards and to the back, you should feel the ears popping.

Polorutz you are a legend, i had been trying to do the frenzel for a long time now, i had actually given up, with your simple explination i done it first go, just gotta try it in the water now, your a legend, thanks mate

Don't forget to "test" the frenzel... in order to test it put a little bit of water (enough to fill up your throat up to the back of your tongue) in your mouth, tilt your head back so the water goes to your throat (therefore closing the entrance to your lungs), do the frenzel, if your ears pop without the water bubbling you're getting it right.

Some say this test is not valid since they can do valsalva... ok... test it in another way too, empty your lungs with air... completely, try valsalva... you wont be able to, if you can still do valsalva then you need to empty your lungs more, when you're absolutely out of air try the frenzel... should work like a charm

Glad I could be of help! :)
