Hi John, the water here is 5C degrees at the moment, so it´s pretty cold, a good wetsuit is a must we mainly get cod and pollok here in the neighborhood, collect scallops and flaunders but there is quite a lot of different fish, scary as well, like the wolffish.
The norwegian answer to deeperblue is Frivannsliv.no - Hovedside a good site, not all that much info in english, but definetly worth a browse, they´re hosting a meet in mai (I think) at a very popular place called fosnstraumen, where the fish are plenty, there are people coming from the other scandinavian countries as well, so looking very much forward to that.
The Norwegian nature is probably a lot like Alaska or Canada.

What´s it like in Redwood then? does not sound very oceanlike

Sounds like you folks probably get nice clear but cold waters then. how thick of wetsuits do you use there?

Redwood City is about 1.5 hhours from Carmel and Monterey where I like to dive. If one place has bad visibility usually i just drive to the next and its the opposite. There are people who dive near to redwood city in Half Moon bay and Pacifica (about 30 minutes drive) but i am not one of them. Sometimes we go north for abalone and fish as well but I do most of my diving south of Redwood city.

the ocean is not far but i have not explored much close to home.

this summer i am going to santa cruz island off the coast of santa barbara which i am looking forward to. we will camp and bring our kayaks for a weekend.

i dont dive as much as i used to these days with work and some other projects.

Can´t brag to much about the visibility here where I live, it´s often 8-10m, it´s better further up north.
I use a omer mimetic 6,5mm open cell, this is alright for winter, but I still use my 5mm 5finger gloves, and that is pretty cold.
My parents just bought a house on the island of Madeira, Portugal, so we are all going to spend a few weeks there this summer, hope it´ll be cool, get some mixed impressions surfing the net, but all in all it should be a good place to shoot fish with camera or speargun.
just ordered a canon compactcamera and a waterproof housing, hopefully get it on monday, feels like christmas

I made some modifications to my JBL Sawed off woody as well.
Mods made the gun feel better in the water. But the trigger mech sucks. The stock is made out of teak and the gun is now open muzzle. In addition I shaved off the slide ring stop on the shaft and drilled a line hole in it too.

that is an excellent setup. i like seeing people get creative with what they have. now i am wishing for the setup you have. it looks really clean and simple. are those 9/16 or 5/8ths bands?

oh yeah, can you tell me what problems you have run into with the stock trigger?

The bands are 9/16'' by 20''. The JBL trigger mechanism to say the least is a piece of crap. It takes so much pressure to fire! And when you do that the gun goes off aim and you miss shots more often. I do not use this gun too often. I mainly use my Riffe Euro. But with these mods the JBL is much more accurate than it was stock. Ditching the bulky slide ring was definitely a big improvement.

Just so you know I did not build that particular stock. I purchased it from Neptonicsystems.com. I did however make a stock on my own. But when I went to put in the muzzle reinforcement. The stock split! And I had to toss it. So I purchased a stock from Neptonic. They build these conversion stocks for JBL and AB Biller guns.

looks like a pretty solid setup. have you tried polishing the parts of the trigger to make the action any easier? maybe a polishing wheel and some rouge would help?

i wonder how long my trigger mechanism will last. i'll definitely let you all know when it goes south: )

I do remember from a while back someone recommended taking out the sear. And cleaning up the rugged edges with some fine grit sand paper. Supposed to make trigger action smoother. But I do not see how it would reduce the trigger pull force?

i think the trigger can be polished where the forefinger piece glides on the bottom of the sear piece. that area of friction can develop scratches since the metal contacts over time. if you polish them up the tiny grooves are no longer there and the mirror like polished surface should essentially glide better than it is than when its worn. i think a lot of times this stuff is hard to see with the eye but when you polish something it gets the real fine scratches out with a polish wheel and rouge, even with polish compound and a little elbow grease.

maybe there is a way to heat treat the mechanism parts and quickly cooling them down to harden them? i will do some research.

hc, i think with the jbl guns, there are no triggers which will take the sear notch and the slot in the handle. other than remaking a handle and trigger housing and recutting the latch area of the spearshaft i dont think there is any way of replacing the trigger mechanism other than with another jbl mechanism.

say, how did that band elevator work on your gun? i was going to make one out of delrin on the 3rd muzzle band hole i have since i am not using it but decided not to do so yet. did this help your gun any?

It did the job of keeping the bands in line with the shaft. But unfortunately I never got to test it before I split the barrel.:head Probably would have worked out well. If the bands are not in line with the shaft. I guess you may have accuracy issues.
BTW I made the band elevator out of a paint roller. LOL.

hey man, nothing wrong with improvising and its my favorite thing to do.

on the side, i had read on spearboard that your father had passed away not long ago. i send you my condolences. my best friend lost his father 2 years ago and he is the sole caretaker for his mom. i think something like this really makes one grow up real fast. his dad would be proud of how he is taking care of his mom. its not easy but thats whats happening right now.

i think its great you like to improvise and make things too. i think for myself there is no better way to learn than to do something even if it does not work out all that well.

man, i sure wish for more time diving these days. i have a trip in may to SCI and cant wait. just to get away from work.

I believe we may be headed out to Catalina this weekend for some yellowtail hunting. Never shot one before (always too far from me) but I am gonna do my best to make it happen this time. I took the express over to Catalina last weekend (Sunday) and free dove Casino Point. While my buddie did his first SCUBA dive in 8 years! I got my new personal best freedive (45-50ft).
Good luck at SCI. There are big fish to be had there. What will you be targeting?

I took the express over to Catalina last weekend (Sunday) and free dove Casino Point. While my buddie did his first SCUBA dive in 8 years! I got my new personal best freedive (45-50ft).

man, i dont know what we'll be targeting, just camp and no work for now: ) i would love to see wsb or yellowtail since its been a long time since i have seen those. someone told me once that yellowtail always come back for a look if you have flashers set up. im going to try a set of flashers, i have em but never really dragged them around with me.

i emailed skip hellen a while back ane hs said at smugglers cove he got easy limits of big halibut at sci . i dont think my wife and i will be able to paddle this dar. i dont want to get stuck on the other side of the point since this is all new to us.

i have a feeling we'll end up chasing calicos and maybe looking for scallops

i'll see where my friends want to go. i need to check a map still.

let us know how catalina goes, i would love to go there too.
