Just got my new Mares Sten 11!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Thanks for your reply tromic.
I really enjoy repliesrofl
However a vaccum barrel is an option that U can choose when U buy the gun (from the manufacter) or is something you have to do that yourself?
regards

You need to decide wich kit you want and put it by yourself.

:)

Are this kits manufactured from the factory?
Should I get a cressi 70 kit, or there are no specific kits?

Zmajmr can make you a very high quality kit to fit your gun, you just need to send him a PM (private message).
I have two of his vacuum kits & can assure you they are very good & very efficient.

It will be nice, but me and Zmajmr are a bit away from each other.
What is the normal range of a 70cm pneumatic without the vacuum kit?

Albania is not so far from Croatia. Normal range without vacuum kit is about 1,5 - 2 m, 8 mm shaft but lower speed and louder. With trident about 1,5 m. More difficult to load the gun.

Hi guys! As promised, here is a pic and first impressions of using the Sten 11:

FirstFishWithPneumatic.jpg

Its first catch was a cod of 2 kilos. Not very impressive, but not bad for the Oslo fjord.

I have to say I love using a pneumatic! It is so much easier to carry and swim with. Especially since I swim for long distances. Now I can swim with the gun at the ready rather than holding it by my side as I had to with my old band gun.

I love the power regulator and I don't think I will ever remove it. It allows me to take shots that would otherwise have destroyed a speartip. Also, the wheezing sound has disappeared from the power regulator and there has been no air leaks that I could detect.

I have loaded the Sten to within an inch of 30 bars, and let me tell you, it has power to spare! I think I will wait a little and get used to it as is before I add a tomba kit. Shooting cod and pollock in less than 3 meters viso, I don't really need a lot of power behind the spear. But I like this gun so much I will start bringing it to the west coast for some big fish action. I am sure the tomba will come in handy there!

As you can see, I attached my camera and I will post a video very soon!

Nice report, I belive video will be interesting :)

Sorry, wrong link.
Here is the real one: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xBis29whpg]YouTube - dykk1stemai2011_0001.wmv[/ame]

Great fun video, no boring bits, I would of been even more impressed if you had hand caught that trout though LOL

Nice one man I have kite sailed in Drammen but have never spearfished In Oslo, possibly because I get to spearfish to my heart content with excellent visibility and large snappers and hogfish around, I enjoyed your video.

Here is my second gun that I bought, I have Cressi SL 70 with 13 mm piston and few days ago I bought Mares Super Sten 11 that comes with one but high quality spear (only with long models comes in package this spaer).

I made video so you will see that aluminium parts from top of speargun are 2 time lighter then from Mares Cyrano, I think it will be easy to hold it in water. Only thing that I do not like is handle, Cressi handle is better and even better is handle from Omar Airbalete. Slider is nice done even better than slider from Devoto spear. Alluminium part from top of gun is from one piece compered to Cyrano that have twp pieces. So it will be chalenag to make Tomba kit for this gun. I planed to buy Cressi SL 100 and to put free shaft kit on the gun but I was disaponted with condition of gun that came. I ordered it and it came from one other shop in wich it was very long time I belive, reson is that few people buy pnumatic spearguns in Croatia so probably lot of old things in shops.

So I need to make Tomba kit for gun (what will be chalange because of tiny original head) and nicer handle than original one (I belive this gun will be good even without vacuum kit).

Sorry to slightly hijack this thread (great pics and vid btw) but I read something that sent alarm bells: Progressive loading of pneumatic gun!!!!!!

I am very interesrted! Anyone can give some more information about actual models in the market atm using this? I need for two reasons:

(a) My father used to own a Drago water cannon :D (proper bazooka tha one) which was loaded progressively (i.e. you could load 10 cms and realease and it stayed put waiting for you to continue) and has never been able to get used to newer types. I d love to buy him a gun like that!

(b) I am only 1.71 cm tall meaning I can just about reach and load my Cyrano 970 spring steel tahitian @ 32 bar using full stretch between foot and opposite hand. Meaning I can not load a Cyrano 110 (I think) :vangry so if there is a progressively loaded 110 cm + pneumatic gun out there I am very much interested ...

Again sorry for slight hijack and ty

Here are some solutions for regular guns:

You could ask Tromic to make you one of his excellent dry barrels kits & drop the pressure to 25 bar.

@Tromic: your solution with the balls looks very interesting. Material? Manufacture process? Or do you sell them?

@Foxfish: Length is the issue not pressure. I could still work it at 40-45 bar if I was sure the gun will tolerate it safely. Bear in mind the long guns are much easier to load at higher pressures. Dont know why this is so but the Cyrano 970 at 32 bar is much easier to load than a technisub 700 I used to own at 27-28 bar (was a real spearbender).

Point of interest: that technisub had a thicker shaft which I (at some point) replaced with a Cyrano 750 lighter shaft. The result was thatit was very diffuclt to prime and you had to do it completely straight or the slightest ngle would destroy the shaft but it would take 3-4 legths and the gun itself right out of your hand if you did not hold it firmly enough lol

I think nowadays (having read all about vents and water columns and what not) that possibly the thinner shaft (was lighter and) made the water easier to expel from the barrel... Anyway for whatever reason at 3-4 lengths it would spear a 1 kg mullet swimming away and half turning to look at me twice like a peccania :inlove. It was awsome :D :D :D

I have tried medium intensity band guns wih 2xbands and theyr are nowhere near this sort of speed. I think noise and the need for more experience in guestimating the aim are the only drawbacks of pneumatics.

Talking about noise though if you are with another hunter the noise initial will draw fish from the immediate area often giving a chance for a 2nd catch (though solo there is no time to reload)... Anyway I talk too much...
