I tested AquaSphere Sphera that is the most popular mask of this type among freedivers, and the above mentioned Sommap Flow mask. I prefer much more the second one for the following reasons:if i want to buy a sphera type mask, can u tell me which kind must i buy?
producer, name, anything...
thanks
- more hydrodynamic (lower profile, frameless shape)
- better compressible - bigger maximal and lower minimal volume, hence great compressible ratio
- seems to get scratched less easily
- stands heavy abuse quite well, I even stepped on it and it survived without popping out the lens
- only one lens with no bridge between the eyes, hence not pressing you to the nose root when compressed
- the strap is simpler and seems to be more abuse proof (though more difficult to adjust)
- seals better both completely loose on surface, as well as maximally compressed in depth (but that may be individual and may change with each face)
- feels more comfortable (may be individual too)
- is cheaper. I bought it for 15€ in a store where Sphera costs 32€
The disadvantage is slightly worse vision, due to softer design and the lens deforming more irregularly than at Sphera. However, I can't read my watch neither with Sphera nor with Flow, so it does not matter to me.
Unfortunately it is not easy to find it - when you look online you get too many false hits. I only saw it in the store of Sebastian Naslund (if I remember well), but rather expensive (I believe 30€). I tried to persuade a local store owner to order a bigger amount, but it is already almost half a year I am asking them regularly, and they still do not have it - either they are incapable, or do not care, because it is too cheap. It is easier finding it in small beach or sport shops in Southern France, but they do not have any online stores.
