"His initial research funded by the Office of Navy Research was aimed at improving Navy SEALs divers' diving capabilities. The most straightforward display of ketones' efficient use of oxygen is that simply by being in the state of ketosis, Dr D'Agostino was able to double his breath-hold time from 2 minutes to 4 minutes, without any prior training."

I've messed around with the ketogenic diet for weight loss and health reasons. I was unaware that it had any effect on breatholds. Has anyone experimented with it?

It shouldn't help, in fact, it should hinder Apnea. Using fat as an energy source requires more oxygen than carbs, and there are plenty of studies which back this up which have shown a decrease in performance (in endurance athletes). I'd wager that this case is just a correlation. Especially considering these aren't huge static time improvements for a beginner. Up until about 4 minutes is where beginners get robbery fast, it's after that where their static times take much more training to improve.
