Stayed in Marathon and speared from the shore exclusivley with the exeption of one day...that day the captain (girlfriends dad) got sick and we had to run to calmer water. We dove a bridge and shot a small blue runner and a yellow jack. We were covered up in huge tarpon with some pushing 200lbs. Saw a ton of snook too but alas they are illegal to shoot also.
The cleaner viz was a welcome change from our Charleston murk as was the variety of fish and the different structure of the reef and bottom. What we did not have was a vast ammount of quality fish. Lost a couple of bigger snapper and shot my 1st hogfish and 1st mackeral.
Had a lot of fun and plan on doing it again next year and hopefully staying in the same house. The only thing I would change if I had a chance would be to have a boat the entire time.
For the person who had the question about where to spear: anywhere off the beach below long key and not in a protected area.
