As some of you know, we found out in Canada that the vast majority of the lanyards the UK team were using did not comply with AIDA safety regulations.

AIDA now ask that ALL lanyards have a quick release both at the wrist/waist and at the rope. They do not think that a velcro strap, slip knot or pinch clip on the wrist/waist is sufficiently easy to release.

Basically - whatever you have either end needs to be able to be undone easily by someone wearing 5ml gloves or mitts - remember in the worst case scenario, it may not be you releasing your own lanyard.

Alun George, BFA Safety Officer, has requested that I ask everyone at saltFree to ensure that their lanyards meet these new specifications. The ideal way to do this is to have a big karabiner around the line, with no locking mechanism and a snap shackle and toggle to pull it open at the wrist.

From January 1st, we will be checking to make sure that ALL the lanyards used at saltfree meet these requirements - so you have a few weeks to redesign yours or make or purchase another.

I have several lanyards for sale at £25 each and some snap shackles at £7.50 if you don't have time to go looking for the parts yourself. Let me know if you would like one.

Students on courses at saltFree will be able to borrow one for the duration of the course but will need to buy their own after that.

If anyone (Alun?) has a photo of a legal lanyard, please could you post it here. If not I will get one up in the next few days

thanks

Sam
