Hi guys,

I have started my Ssi Freediving course a month ago and the equalisation went very well at the beginning in 5mtr pool.

But when the more o go deeper at the blue the more i face a challenge equalising my left ear as it doesn't really respond that quick to frenzel like my right ear does.

Two weeks ago i went to give it another try and i went down slower focusing more on equalising my left ear and I successfully managed to go below 11 mtrs. But when i went up my trainer saw some blood coming out from my nose.

i know i pushed my self a bit harder to get that left ear equalised but am not really sure why my nose bleed and how i stop that from happening again.

I would also appreciate if you guys gave me some tips on how to equalise my left ear without pushing my self that hard.

I have no problem with my breath holding technic so far.

It's that the equalisation issue with my left ear.

Looking forward to hear from you.

I have the same problem. In my case it was beacause of some problems with my breathing thru the nose. But even after a surgery it's not so good as must be. My left evstahian tube (dunno how it calls in eng) is always closing after few dives if I miss to equalize intime. In my case I found the solution: I can do equalization again, if I moving my tongue to the right against my left ear, than issue from the left side of my mouth going straigth and my ear tube is opening a bit and everything is going ok

Oh thanks alot mate for the feedback. I will try it out and let's see if it works or not :).

Cheers,
Maher

You can also tilt your head to one side, I have issues with my right ear and this works for me, anyway good luck and dive safe ;)

A friend of mine has a similar problem due to his eustachian tubes being very narrow. Frenzel didn't always work so he learnt Mouthfill. It's usually used for when you're approaching residual volume at depths of 30m+ but it it works for him and in the mean time he does it automatically, even on the surface before his dive.
Here's a link:

You can give it a try, but I would still advise you to see an Ears, Nose and Throat specialist.
Maybe take a look at the vented Doc's Pro Plugs. They prevent water from entering the ear, but still allow you to equalize. I use them and find that they delay the pressure on the ear drum. Dive safe.

Thanks alot for the feedback will give it a try. Am actually travelling to bali to practice may be i just need to learn a proper technique. Will keep updated :)

dont want to freak you out but look into the state of your left kidney.(does it hurt if somebody slaps you on the lower back around kidney area and other symptoms ) ...body is a complex thing;)

I don't mean any offence but it seems that you don't really have the knowledge to give an advice. Because it was just more of a technique problem. I learned how to properly equalise and am diving easily to 16 mtrs now :). I guess with more training i will hit the 20 mtrs in no time.

sorry -advice was given assuming your technique was as good as my physiology and reflexology knowledge
assumption is a mother of cock ups hey

You sorted out your problem already, but thought might be useful for anyone reading this.

I had exactly the same issue and I sorted out mine by reducing tension around neck, chest and upper- back with stretching, massage and consciously reminding myself to relax the muscles which I tend to tense when and stress, focusing on something etc.

Also, got myself neti pot which I use once every day or two. I think it has made real difference especially as I suffer from all sorts of allergies.
