I'm totally ignorant of what types/lengths of fish are legal.

Can anyone suggest a book (with pictures) or some other resource so that I can make sure I'm hunting legal stuff?

Hey, just trek down to the local license supply store (i.e. walmart, kmart or local fishing store). They'll all be able to sell you a license and they'll also have free booklets w/ species pictures, legal lengths, bag limit, and seasons for harvesting.

The only catch is you have to keep up on changes to the regulations throughout the season. A quick check to the local equivilent to the DNR or fish and games website will keep you abreast of all of that.

Last thing is to avoid buck fever b/c the 14" cabezon looks like a 20 incher underwater. Get a good reference before you shoot and have fun.
