Shaun you're welcome and you have the good spirit to share knowledge, which I appreciate.
Let's just specify that spearguns should not be loaded out of water: it can be very, very dangerous.
In my country it's illegal too: 1.023 Euro of a bounty for a loaded speargun out of water, even on a boat or clipped to a float.

agreed - Just thought that these vids give a beginner a much better understanding on how to load guns as i know manny beginers who have given up due to lack of understanding. No harm intended - fortunatly you can say that the Guns were not loaded in your country!

Very good point Spago, and I'll give you a spine shuddering reason why, happened to a buddy of mine: we were spearing a long way off a VERY BUSY beach area. He lost his float, ONE GUN ON IT WAS LOADED, never to be seen again. I can just imagine a kid finding it washed up, and of course what would he do??? :martial:martial:martial point it at his mate and press the trigger? Too bad to even imagine.

Hey, not to present a cavalier or less than concerned attitude, in defence of these "Wild and Crazy South African Guys" :friday I Instinctively know that they were among trusted friends. I watch world class Spearo's like Sheri Daye and company sitting in the boat with fully cocked spearguns. However, I won't downplay the potential gravity of a scenario involving mixed skill levels. Having said this, I'm quite composed and comfortable hunting with top echelon spear gunners.

"always assume a gun is loaded, even if THINK you KNOW it is not" would be a good one in that case. just never point it at anyone and be conscious of where the muzzle is at all times.

you want to know the truth? a dark little secret? When I got my first "modern" gun, a pnuematic, i too had read the labels and such, and had read here, but never understood the "never load and fire out of the water" thing.

the never fire thing is one law of physics alone: "water resistance"

so i'm sitting on the steps in the garden, my 4 year old sitting next to me, I load and fire (of course, downrange), spear whacks out a 10000000km/hr and (of course, now i can say) bounces back on the line at about 1000000Km/hr, missing my sons head by 10cm.

i am going white now at the thought...................

(if you really must fire on land, take off the line, have a safe backdrop, and plan for busted bands, pistons and spears)

i had a close incident. while my gun was loaded i just came into shore i put the spear dug into the ground in about 4 foot of water and just had a talk with my mate. when i got to pick up my gun i press the trigger (i know i was amateur) anyway my gun flys about 20 feet in the air whilst the spear stayed stationary but the back of the gun missed my face by about 6 inches. close call. also i was free shafting without line which was also lucky
