Hi Folks,

I'm considering taking up spearfishing. I'm based in Kussisaari, Helsinki, Finland. My interest is initially shallow snorkelling work, but I'd like to find a buddy with whom to practice one-up-one-down, in order to target 10m depths.

I'm pretty old to be starting out - 48 - and probably not as fit as I need to be (but I do row church boats in the summer).

Kind regards, Robin.

Hi, Robin. Some of our most active members are quite a bit older. Age is but a number. :) You may want to post in the Europe/Mediterranean subforum and look for a buddy in there. Make sure to reply to previous threads from people in your area. as well. Here's a link: https://forums.deeperblue.com/forums/europe-mediterranean.92/

I highly recommend taking a freediving class. They teach you the correct techniques right off the bat, which is invaluable for progress as well as safety. You have a great chance of reaching and exceeding your goal if you go that route.

Will do, thanks!

I'm in touch with Tony Eynon in the U.K. And hope to take one of his courses soon.

Kind regards, Robin.

Here's a video of Robin's first pike:

It was fun to put someone on a fish. At the same time I want to thank everyone that has done the same.

Thanks "japppo". It was great diving with you that first day, and on our subsequent dives together also.

One day perhaps I too can help a new diver "get wet" and take their first fish!

I'm in Los Christianos, Tenerife this week. Any other forum members there at the same time? I plan to hit 10m for the first time and it would be great to have someone to "one-up/one-down" with, and to jointly celebrate after!
