lung pain

hi DiveDeeper,
thanks for your reply. My buddy is not currently diving : ( so I don't know . He moved to China to train marshal arts. I hope he comes back. He almost got the National record in his first ever attempt in dyn.

Speaking of lung pain, did you guys do some air packing? Last time I remember trying to do packing my upper chest had a dull pain. So I gave up on packing and hopefully the PFI course teaches me better on how to do it better and more safely.

I experienced a burning pain after hard breathholds (especially apnea walk) in the middle of my chest, right under where the ribcage ends. I pushed through quiet some hard contractions. Lungs were as full as I can get them without packing. The pain takes about 30 seconds to go away. I had a more severe case after my first deep dives. The next days I was running, the pain slightly came back, but left after I stopped running (breathing heavy).
Is that something I should be worried about?
The pain's at the level of the "Xiphoid process".

Anyone? It really starts bugging me. The pain fully returned after I had a contraction while doing a dolphin kick yesterday. It feels just like a punch in the solar plexus. :duh

Hard to tell, it can be a strained muscle, but there is the heart in this place too, so there is a possibility it comes from there. You better visit a doctor, online diagnosis is rarely a good idea.

I already had my heart checked up 2 months ago prior to starting to dive. So I guess at least it's not my heart.
I could reproduce the pain this morning by pulling up my diaphragm as much as I can. Maybe there's a problem with inflexibility of it or just cramping up while it shouldn't. (heavy contractions) Are there any exercises that could help me to "feel" my diaphragm better to determine if it's relaxed or not? I mean relaxing a finger or a toe is easy, but a muscle that can't be seen from the outside is tough imho.

I had something similar recently and it was just a strained muscle. I stopped apnea for a week and it went away. It seems I went too fast in the beginning, the body needs time to adapt to the new strains it experiences due to bh.

First of all it is very important to find out the exact reason of lung. It's better to go to a doctor. I suggest all of you who are suffering from lung pain to go for yoga therapy. Bhastrika, Anuloma-viloma, kapalabhati, sarvangasana and padmasana would do wonder to you, if you can practice it according to the recommendations and expert's advice.

I'm not sure but the breathing technique before a dive could be a problem or may exacerbate an original problem. Everyone reponds differently to different techniques. While i'm not an expert i've heard that 'packing' can cause trouble.

I think I overdid it a bit with the diaphragm stretching in the first place. And never let it heal out then. I took a few days of and it seems like I'm fine now again.

I think your are right, he is overdoing it. Diving in the morning then any serious training in the day is hardcore. We have had guys in our club who did that and one for one they started having trouble when their freediving training became more intense and most couldn't work out why they were having trouble, they just didn't realise how much spearfishing taxes the body.
