I have been in a battle with myself over choosing a speargun. I cant decide between the Sporasub ONE Speargun ONESPEARGUN 2009 WEBSITE

or the Mako Oceanic Pro MAKO Spearguns - Store

How much do you guys know about either one? does anyone on here have either gun or know someone with one. The sporasub gun obvoiusly has every detail imagineable but the price is an average of $600 the mako is gonna be about $350 for the comparible model. I have actually shot the Mako and it is really sweet. Scubastore.com has the ONE gun for $450 shipped to my house but there customer service is horrible and i cant get any answers from them. Plus they are saying that they cant ship any guns or knives via the air right now and thats the only way to get it here from spain. Which would you guys pick if it were you?

I dont personally have one but I know a lot of guys here in Hawaii who use Makos and love them. Accurate, powerful, and great customer service.

You might try posting on Hawaii Skin Divers forum as there are a lot of Mako owners there. Im sure one or more of them could give you some good critiques.

ok thanks man do you have to live in hawaii to join that forum? because i wish i did but i dont!

just another thought to consider dodd mako are basically rabitechs, which are very good guns.

Neither of those guns are exactly cheap & I would think both would be very good guns but for me the sporasub gun is in a different league.
Not to say the Mako is not going to be a great accurate gun its just that I like the high tech & more modern looking OneSpeargun.
You could however buy a mamba kitted airgun for that price!

I agree the Sporasub is like the Ferari of the two, but scubastore is the only place i can afford it from. I havent looked much into Pnuematic guns, Do you prefer the air gun? what is the benefit and how do you charge it?

I should also say that I want this as a kelp gun to go hunt white seabass and yellowtail, but also be able to pop a sand bass or sheep head if i so decide. What size gun should i get? if i get the ONE gun it will be a 105 but Mako would either be a 100cm or a 110cm which is better. Is 110 too much to manuever in the kelp and rocks? What would the kill range be on a white sea bass with these guns?

No, its an open forum, most the guys there are pretty helpful. There is also a guy on the forum who I believe is a rep for Mako as well. There are a few younger members who dont always have the most constructive comments but I guess that goes with any open forum. Just take it at face value.

Don

Can you disclose your preference.

I would go with none of the above, my pick would be a Omer HF2 110 with Match 50 reel.

I own a One105 it is a fantastic gun, the shaft is unique the ring works great. But the HF2 is easier to move around.

I know thedodd's hunting area very well. He needs two guns, one for calico
and sheephead and a game gun at least 50'' long with a sliptip for WSB and
yellowtail. A pro can take WSB with a pole spear or shorter euro gun
but not consistently. The closer one match's the gun to the game fish the more success he will have. The 40 to 70 lb WSB have very soft flesh, the
water can be green and all a spero gets to see some times is a faint yellow
fin tip. This can make ''kill'' shots hard to execute even for a pro that has taken many hundreds of game fish.

I can shoot yellowtail with a flopper and one band, shafts get bent and fish
are lost at a higher rate than if I used my game gun, slip tip and drag line.
I would be using the omer Hf2 110 and match 50 off the beach for calico
and sheephead.
Cheers, Don

I build my own and they are very effective, and I just received a Airbalete 110 to muck around with off the beach.
If I was buying a gun for local White Sea bass and Yellowtail along with some calico bass, It would be a Riffe E-120 or E130. The Euro is very accurate and tracks nicely. Some may know Jay and the Riffe family have been my friends for 30 years, but I tell it like it is when some asks me about gear.
My second choice would be a Wong in the 50'' range, his guns are art, and speak for themselves.
I would love to see a Airbalete in the 135 range, I love the big air cannons,
I have a few but most are wall hangers.
Cheers, Don

Thanks Don.

You are correct about not using the airbalete from a beach dive, you really need to be careful about clean all the possible sand on the shaft and in the muzzle.

Just the opposite on the use for me. I plan on diving mostly rocky points
and coves through the surf zone. I'll do my best to keep it clean. A dry barrel
kit may be in it's future after I shoot it stock for a while.
I have no problem with carrying out preventive maintenance and mods, it's
just part of the Dark Side.

Is a 110 to big of a gun for beach dives? would a 110 be rediculously big for shallow kelp and reefs in the laguna area or offshore in the mainland kelp beds? Im pretty shure im going Mako, i called the owner and he s the coolest guy ive ever talked to about guns, great customer service too. But i cant decide, the oceanic 110 is 65.5 inches long and the 100 is 61.5 inches long? Is this too big?

the sporasub one guns have alot of plastic. the mako is at least as good, if not better in alot of ways. for half the price, is it really any question? dano, from mako spearguns is the coolest guy ever too. he will give it to you on a 4 month pay plan with no credit check. personally, i hunt with wood guns with enclosed tracks only, but if i were choosing btween mako and sporasub,(which is what the thread started as) i would go mako. even if the price WAS the same. and it isnt even close.

What ever you buy for WSB, gamefish other then ''paddy'' Yellowtail,
should have a least a 50'' BARREL, unless you hunt with the skills of a world
class spero.

You should ask either Bill Macintyre or Don Paul who are both White Bass experts - interestingly - have a look at Dons post here http://forums.deeperblue.com/pneumatic-spearguns/76393-new-omer-pneumatic-25.html#post799326

He already asked me in a PM, but he apparently didn't like my answer, so he's looking for another opinion

I told him that either Mako was too small to be a good wsb gun, although it should work for reef fish. My assassin friend Dam Nguyen uses a three band Wong 50" GR gun with great success, but he is a special case. Most of us mortals find a three band 55" more useful in all but the poorist vis.
