It was not an attack. I cut and pasted the pertinent portion that so the we all know what we are doing is ok. It was a reply, not an attack. The rest about publicity and speaking out was for general knowledge and and to keep moral up.

Again, the cut and pasted part were to show we are nowhere near illegal in our action.

Don't read my post with a defensive mindset, it's all sharing information.

P.S. The cowboy line was thrown in for the sole intent of adding the jab to Wreckrunner.

Considering that the UW is netting carps by the thousands to try and IMPROVE our lakes I don't think they have an issue with us spearing them- since it's totally legal already and our lakes are in tough shape.

As far as a contest goes, this is all about bragging rights and no one really cares if a T-shirt is involved at the end is it's going to piss off the hook and line crowd- we can always forgo the prizes.

As far as the toxic fish go, well there are worse fishing the lakes when it comes to toxins- like walleye! Talking to one of the fish toxicologists doing her post-doc at the UW I found out that they actually use walleye in their experiments as an easily digestible form of mercury for their test subjects- mainly mice and things like that. Makes me never want to eat another one when I heard that- and I know lots of locals who are consuming them on a regular basis. Since carp are vegetarians there's less risk with them than eating ANY game fish that come out of our local lakes.

I worry less about our impact than the tournaments the angler crowds do on the game fish. I've seen more musky this year with battle scars from their so called catch and release tournaments. Fish with eyeballs ripped out, scars along their body, jaws ripped in half, etc. Here's a picture of one of the victims:

I had contacted the DNR this morning to Make sure we are not in any violation of any sort. They assured me we are fine. From what and how we are taking the carp to how I am disposing of them. They said said at least I'm using the carp the right way instead of alot of fisherman than dump them on the banks or off in a ditch somewhere. Our year long contest is not in any violation either as we do not require anyone to pay to be in it.

So guys if every thing goes to plan & the ice melts & the water is clear, how many carp could you individually expect to shoot? Is it easy to shoot them or are they shy? How big do they get in that area & what do you do with the body's?
Good luck anyway :)

Boy Scott, I guess we all think alike. :)

It seems that both LandShark and I also have calls into the DNR and I am waiting for a return call from one of them

The person I talked to on the phone said it sounded fine with them, but they wanted to have someone higher up double check and get back to me.

If it turns out to be legal I'm waiting for Landshark to show up and school us- since he has over 30 years experience on these lakes.:martial

They shot 31 last weekend between 3 divers. The state record is in the 50lb class. In cold water they move slower. As it warms up they become more a hunt.

As for the bodies, the go to Scott and he puts them in his fields as fertilizer, animals come in to eat them too. I plan to bring a small one back to my mother in law, she likes them I guess. They are pretty boney and the bigger ones (so I hear) taste like mud.

Foxfish- Where we are planning on going the ice should be gone, because the water is slightly warmer there. WE could shoot anywhere from 2 carp to 30 carp. It really depends if the carp are in the area or not. Usually one person shoots 3-4 carp. But last week, JON and I went crazy: I got 13, Jon got 14. If they see you they take off. So, it is a stealthy operation- a game of Hide and seek. They can get fairly large 30 pounds + but usually they are 15-20 pounds. I use the carp in my fields as fertilizer (now don't get mad) Carp over here are not the same as carp over there. If you want to know more about this - I'll PM you links to the destruction of carp here in Wisconsin. The Small carp can be smoked- I personally don't have a smoker - yet. I plan on buying one in the next month.

They are pretty easily spooked creatures once the water has warmed above 40 deg.

One may spear a hundred or none in a day even in a lake full of fish.

Around here they can get pretty large...Over 50 pounds is a really big specimen.

Not many people eat them around here, but some smoke the smaller ones. I think they're pretty tasty once smoked.

Other than that...Fertilizer!

Thanks for the answer, I am sure if lived where you do I would be joining the hunt.

I've eaten carp and they aren't as bad as you think. I used to shoot some small ones for my grandfather when he was still alive. My grandmother would fry them up, smoke them, pickle them and had a bunch of other recipes. They are a pain to clean- and my grandmother told me that I had better not ever bring another carp to her after gramps died.rofl

Smoking them is the best, and gramps used to say that a smoked carp tasted much better than a smoked trout. He owned a small grocery store for years and would have a couple of smoked carp waiting in back for some of his better customers.

A dive buddy of mine is from Prague and she said that they used to eat a Christmas Carp every year and it was considered a delicacy. I believe that is a different breed from what we have here.

As far as what they do to our lakes, well here's a story from the paper just this week:

Seize the carp from Lake Wingra
Bill Novak — 3/12/2008 11:09 am

Carpe diem, or "seize the day" in Latin, was turned into "seize the carp" Tuesday as commercial fishers and Department of Natural Resources staff hauled seine nets of the unwanted species out of Lake Wingra, a key step in a project trying to restore clarity to the lake water and help fish habitat.

Carp are considered the main reason for turbidity, or water cloudiness, in Lake Wingra, because their eating habits stir up sediments on the bottom of the lake, cutting off sunlight to desired lake plants needed to stabilize the lake bottom as well as suspending nutrients that fuel algae blooms.

DNR fisheries biologist Kurt Welke said the first netting brought up an estimated 6,000 pounds of carp, or about 1,000 fish.

Radio tracking over the past two years showed carp congregated in the deep central basin of the lake in winter. Tuesday, carp were extracted by pulling long seine nets under the ice, then taking the nets out of the water through holes cut in the ice.

Game fish, including muskie, were quickly returned to the cold water, while the carp were kept captive in the nets under the ice until the nets were pulled.

Commercial fisher Steve Kallenbach of Stoddard, Wis., and his crew will try today to gather more carp, attempting to determine if the numbers of fish make future carp nettings commercially viable.

"We want to pin down how large the carp resource is," Welke said.

DNR limnologist Dick Lathrop started a lake clarity experiment in the lake in 2005, enclosing a 2.5-acre section of the lake and removing the carp inside. The resulting clarity of the water in the confined area clearly indicated that carp suppression would help the whole 349-acre lake on Madison's west side.

Population estimates of carp in the whole lake, determined by gathering carp that had fins clipped two years ago by Welke, will be a deciding factor in determining whether or not removing thousands of carp will be worthwhile or a nonfactor in improving the fishery and water quality of Lake Wingra.

If the netting exercise shows the commercial fishers can remove a good portion of the carp, the seining will probably continue this year.

"But if the netting shows there are 50,000 carp in the lake and the commercial fishers can only remove 1,000 fish, that's not cutting into the problem," Welke said.

Welke will also be taking carp samples back to the DNR offices to do age testing on the species to see if the carp population is growing old or if it is made up of a majority of younger fish.

David Liebl of the Friends of Lake Wingra said pulling carp out of the lake will go a long way to making the urban lake a better body of water.

"We know removing carp improves water clarity and benefits the sport fishery as well as recreation on the lake," Liebl said.

I just got off the phone with the DNR and this is what he said.

To be considered a tournament we have to do two things:

First, we need to have more than 21 people.

Second, we need to give away more than $500 in prizes.

To be considered a contest we must do BOTH of these things.

If we only have 19 people show up, but give away $10,000 in prizes, we still don't need a tournament permit. That was his example and he thought that everything we were doing was great.

If we start getting more than 21 people at these things we can just make the prize list less than $500 and where fine, but I'm all for having only 3 people enter and Deeper Blue start giving out $10,000 in prize money!:inlove

Jon

$10,000 in prizes- I say we give Stephan a call :D Also, about the year long contest. In order for us to need a permit- it would have to be all from the same water and more than 40 people.

It's always good to get the WORD from the DNR. Just clarifies Things.

So, MARCH 22, 9am The OUTLET! Hope to see you all there!

Ok, the hornets nest was kicked. We sorted it all out. We are legal. Lets get back to the task at hand. That's enjoying the sport! We can all do it in our own way, if we do or do not want to participate in the get gatherings.

So, it's going to be at the Outlet?
If so, I think it's time for me to check it out in person :)

I just hope that I will be able to find it :)

Just so happens I'll be moving during the Carp-o-rama....:waterwork

Did'nt get to close on my house in Delavan until thursday...We were SUPPOSED to close March 1st!!! :vangry

But I FINALLY have my house! :)

I'll have plenty of "catching-up" to do! But considering I'll be less than 10 minutes from Geneva. Comus, and Delavan lakes I just might be able to do it!

All great fishing lakes... And Geneva has good clarity year 'round!

See you guys soon! Good luck and be safe!

OK, If conditions are bad at the OUTLET- who is willing to go to Sheboygan at the powerplant on Lake Michigan?

Otherwise the other option is to CANCEL if the conditions are bad. I will post Friday Evening the conditions of the outlet. But I would like to know WHO IS COMING if its in MADISON and if were to be in Sheboygan.

i go were ever you go bro i will let you know friday what the outlet in madison looks like if you know anyone up by the other outlet see if they can check it out if there is a way to know what it is like before we drive 2-3 hours

JON stopped by the OUTLET yesturday and said it was BLACK!!!!!

I think it is safe to say that we will NOT hold the Carp-o-roma at the OUTLET in MADISON. If anyone is wanting to go to the Sheboygan Outlet - Let me know. I'm willing to go.

I just now saw ILDiver's reference to me becoming "northernized".......I can't argue with that. I wear a t-shirt if it hits 40 degrees now.

Anyways.......I can't make it. It sucks, but I have some deadlines to meet on my dissertation if I want to get that Ph.D. in August, so......I have to sit in my office all weekend and try to be productive.

Sorry guys, I was looking forward to it, but I'm going to have to catch up with ya'll in a few weeks after I have a draft submitted.

Be safe.........and somebody try to keep Chris in check. Try to get him to look like a spearfisherman and not just a walking Omer advertisement.
