hey guys i was wondering about something, what do you guys believe to be the effective range on a factory issue mares cyrano 970? so i guess another way of putting it- how many wraps on the shooting line before its just extra line getting in the way? i did a couple of test shots yesterday in a pond and it never hit the end of my line with a tug or anything. i would really like to streamline this gun till i am able to throw a tomba on it. it is at around 30 bar right now. i just measured the shooting line i have and it is 16 feet. probably way too much huh? wishful thinking on my part! ha ha! hey everyone, greetings from oregon, and any feedback is always cherished and appreciated! take care---steve

I would say 1 wrap with gun out of box using original shaft, slider, rope. Two wraps with Tomba and mono line 1,5 mm. With 1 mm line up to 3 wraps for smaller fish, 1 kg.
I use mine at 25 bar with 2 wraps. It will pull some line off my reel when I miss.

so is a ''wrap'' one complete circle of line or is it just one line the length of the gun? dumb question i know. price of being a newbie!haha! or maybe a better way to ask the question would be to say how many centimeters would one wrap of cord be on a 970 centimeter gun? thanks in advance!--steve
Most long pneumatic spearguns will shoot two line wraps (on high power) as is provided the gun has sufficient pressure inside it. Are you sure that the pressure is 30 Bar right now? If you want to find out what it will do pump it up until you can just load it and take another shot in that pond. Then you can work backwards pressure-wise from there. Usually the length of nylon cord line supplied with the gun (about two wraps) is what the gun can shoot to. Then as an experiment shoot it without any line attached to the spear, you will see the shaft goes a lot further (make sure that you aim at something while doing this). That gives you an idea of the limits of performance from a standard gun. As always getting close enough to take the shot is what spearfishing is all about, they either come to you out of curiosity or you sneak up on them while feigning disinterest.
hey thanks for all the replies guys. you know, maybe my gun isn't at 30 bar. i have been blessed with the ability to load all my spearguns (with the exception of my 1100 cyrano- need to make a loader for it with extra string.) with a reasonable amount of grace and good form without ever ending up with a bent shaft- on the 700 sten and cyrano, and both of those are at 30 bar PLUS! ha ha! and i've seen friends struggle to load them at the same time. (makes me cringe as i see my shafts reach critical memory when they do it!) and my 970 isn't to the point of me being anywhere not near being able to load it. so maybe it could use a couple hundred more pumps. maybe i should enlarge the water ports too?
Yes it is. To have better performance with the out of the box gun do not use the rope you got in the box. Put mono line 1.2 - 1.5 mm, and change the slider and the shaft for better quality. Next you could put a vacuum kit. To measure the pressure in Cyrano (11 mm barrel) load the gun against the home scale. Number of Kg = Number of Bars. Without the kit you might have the gun on 30 bar, with vacuum kit on 25 bar. The gun is about two times less noisy with the kit and has better buoyancy.

It seems odd that you needed to ask this question at all if you already have three pneumatic spearguns (Cyrano 1100, Cyrano 970, Sten 700) and have loaded and subsequently fired them. The hand pump dimensions limit the maximum pressure that you can physically pump a pneumatic speargun up to, plus the guns have been built to incorporate a safety factor above and beyond whatever pressure you can reach with the pump, which is about 40 Bar. So you can experiment without damaging the gun, but long term storage (years) at over 35 Bar may be inadvisable. Although it took more than 10 years I eventually cracked the inner "O" ring seat on one of my guns (an older Mares "Miniministen") which I assume was due to too much air pressure inside it, I only found out when I noticed oil weeping out from under the plastic nose cone where the muzzle screws up into it.
thanks for your input pete. yes i do own every cyrano except the 850. however it seems that i only ever find myself using the 700 sten and cyrano as the oportunity to use the 970 and 1100 just hasn't presented itself yet.i have only test fired both guns 3 or 4 times each and always in 8 feet or less of visibility. the water is very murky here in oregon. also all the guns that i have been using, 550 and 700's all three have those telephone cord things on them. (coiled mono line) so that is kinda the basis of my question with the line wraps and range of these guns. figured a few questions might provide some better insight! and indeed it has! wow! so you honestly cant over pump those things by hand then huh? well i'm gonna just pump the crap out of them then till i get one of those tombas set up! very interesting to know pete! sorry some of my questions seem dumb. i am just now celebrating my first year anniversary of coming to the dark side! ha ha! take care you guys!--steve

Shooting a speargun that has a flight range further than you can see under limited visibility conditions is asking for trouble as you never know what else may be lurking out there just beyond your range of vision, like another diver! Your longer pneumatic spearguns are not going to be much use to you under those murky conditions, but that is why manufacturers make short guns. Mares usually supply their guns with black nylon cord shooting line, so the auto-coil shooting lines must have been supplied by someone else, probably in anticipation of the murky conditions that you would be encountering.
ha! i'm not that new pete! but i guess you never know about some people huh? i am fully aware of my responsibility as a diver who weilds weapon. oregon is a sparsely populated state and everyone who sees me come out of the water thinks i'm nuts for being in it! rest assured that i would not ever put anyone else in danger. my gun tests were conducted in a river here in this state. i anticipate using this gun this summer in some lakes with clear water 50+ feet of visibility to hunt rough fish, and hopefully in some hi vis ocean water at some point. i was really just hoping to get my gun fine tuned and ready to go. i really do appreciate your comments and information. if my questions seem idiotic or ignorant maybe it would be best to wrap this thread up for now. i can probably find my answers somewhere just by reading all the posts in here however long it may take instead of bugging you guys so much. you have all provided me with way more information than i had ever hoped for anyway!

I don't think your questions are idiotic at all, but other people read these threads, so I put those last comments up just in case someone thinks they can blaze away in limited viz without any consideration of where the shaft might end up. I have seen it done, plus not everyone dives alone and at times an area seemingly devoid of other divers can reveal others who entered the water later but were not detected. You said you were a newbie, but as this thread developed it turned out you had a lot of guns. Being a forum, these posts are also for a wider audience.
