i have used the search function with lots of success about other makes, just nothing about the mares weight vest - seems quite reasonably priced, so does anyone use it? is it very adjustable?

thanks in advance

rob

I'm also interested in this vest because it has quick release buckles. A feature i didn't need until now. But you never know.
Some pics:
[Matériel] Baudrier MARES

Just saw on the sporasub page that they sell also a vest with quick release. Rather cheap 25 Eur. And ordinary lead plates as weights.

Thanks for this thread. I am desperate for a vest for spearfishing, as I am finding my weight belt causes me some back pain.

What are the alternatives you have found. Key features for me would be comfort + quick release. I would still carry some ankle or belt weight. The only one I found when I started looking was from Omer I think.

There does seem to be a few on the market but i liked the fact that it has a fairly quick and easy way of ditching it and it seems to be adjustable.

So if anyone uses a Mares vest give us some feedback

cheers rob

I bought the Mares Weight Vest early this year and think it is a great vest. (However, still undecided whether I prefer vest/belt combo or just belt)

There are lots of options available so the reason I chose this vest was because

a) Minimal amount of neoprene compared the the Omer and Seac vests
b) Could use standard dive weights
c) Easy to remove weight depending on depth of fishing
d) Fairly easy to ditch

Negatives

1) The shoulder straps come loose - I tied mine in a knot but there is still some movement in the vest.

Hey Dave!

thanks for the feedback - just an idea why dont you adjust it to fit well, then stitch the webbing straps together so they dont slip? If you dont mind me asking what size chest do you have!! lol!! Just trying to get an idea if i would be able to get a good fit or not before i buy one.

thanks rob

Wow

What a price, seems to be made of gold. Scubaland.fr sells them also. 32 Euro, with shipping it will cost around 44 pounds. So you can save some money.

mine arrived this week. hope it helps my back.
how do you ware it with a belt. Does the belt go through the bungee loop? - this would mean you would have to drop vest and belt in emergency?

Having seen DafyddRees's vest a couple of months ago I was pretty impressed.

Just purchased one about 5 minutes ago from Diving Direct :)

Of course Rob, not a problem at all!

As I said, I was impressed with Dafydd's - I've just picked up a nice Quick Release Omer Rubber belt too so that combined with the Vest should be a VAST improvement over my current Nylon Belt which to be honest, is a hateful piece of sh**te :D

Got mine the other week and have now used it on 3 dives. Initially dissapointed as buckles had been stitched on the wrong way so they would not hold the strap, and the vest would slip down off the back. Mares now aware and have sorted things out. I think you would be unlucky to get one the same.

Once corrected the vest works fine (and the vest stays in place). I do need to extend the rear bungee, or see if I can get some more length by moving the knot further down as its a stretch to get it under the belt.

Has allowed me to move 4kg of my belt which helps (lower back pain). I want to move another 2kg down to my ankles which should then make things more comfortable still.

Used the vest for the first time over the weekend - absolutely amazing!

I've never felt so comfortable in the water - can't recommend it enough!

How do the vest stays in Place..? I mean without a Buckle in front, which is connecting the two shoulderstraps..? The Bunee to connect it with the belt is enough..? I bought a salvimar weight vest latetly which looks quite similar to the mares but it didnt come with anything to connect to the belt and its a bit loose. Although its just one size.

It's a good design, so when you tighten the shoulder straps, as the neoprene is stretchy, you get a really, snug, tight fit.

You are meant to tuck the ball at the back under your weights belt to keep the vest from moving when you dive - I've only rememberd to do this once as to be honest, the vest doesn't move at all.

By removing the weights from around my waist, I feel so much happier and comfortable in the water - such a good buy!

Two points to note:

1) Be gentle with the buckles, I was a bit rough with mine and one cracked, fortunately it was in a place where I could bind it up with mono and super-glue so it's fine now.

2) Be gentle when you put it down / store it etc. The neoprene which covers the weights is quite thin and on my friends vest, has torn a little where the vest has been bumped against rocks etc - mine is fine, however.

thanks for the info bro

I think this is the point. My salvimar vest is even loose with the straps completely tightend. It slips a bit down, when i put it on with 4 kg. It might me a bit too big maybe. Wonder why, because i am not too fat nor too skinny. I (186cm, 91kg, 5mm wetsuit)am thinking of ordering the mares now...Hopefully it fits.. :D
