Mares weight vest

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Got my MARES today and its completetely different than the Salvimar.
It fits like you said. Very good fit, even without my 5mm wetsuit on.

Recommend it to every one else!

I have ordered one too a week or more ago if it ever turns up hope it takes the weight off my lower back and balances me out a bit in the water how are the weights held in and do they more around when you duck dive dont really wont one in the back of the head!!! moving 2kg to your feet sounds alot how did you get on?

The weights are in neoprene pockets, which are very tight.
So the weights dont move. The vest does a bit.
I tried to duckdive with 4kg in the vest and it moved a bit.
So i would suggest moving the ball under the belt.

yes.. I find mine will move when I duck dive, so the ball under the belt is important. I push mine under the belt and then squeeze it between two of the belt weights to keep it in place. I also made the cord will the ball a bit longer as prior to this it was always pulling out from the belt.

I have ordered an Omer vest two weeks ago and payed for it from diveinn I contacted them and they say I haven't.I thought fair enough I am crap on computers so I prob cocked up tho I did go through the whole order-delivery-payment saga.so I reordered but went for the Mares vest ? To day I had two e-mails one saying there out of stock and it will be a few days that's fine. The next one said they won't be stocking it again !!!!!and do I won't cancel it order a simular product? Fair I suppose but why did they let me order it in the first place?!at work to day I had a call from a courior trying to deliver my first order ?life's like that isn't it .I won't the Mares vest really !bet I've paid for them both!Fun Fun Fun.

Ummm... I'm not 100% sure... how many pockets are there? It's been that long since I've been in the water that I've forgotten :duh

If there are 4 pockets, I add 4kg!

If there are 5 pockets, I add 5kg!

Whatever - I just fill all the pockets up! The less round my waist the better!

I always dive with 9kg as that weight seems to do me fine for shallow and deeper depths.

What percentage weight should you put in your vest?as its not quickly ditched (I'm thinking of putting quick release clips on it) my new vest will hold 4 kg which is what I've put in at the moment but as I only have 8.5 kg in total on my belt is this to much?As I'm only 65kg would 50% 4kg be unsafe?

Good question that was never answered. I'd think you would want to be able to float easily at the surface with your weight vest still on and no weight belt (e.g. after you released it in an emergency). But the point at which you want to starting floating/be neutral in this configuration is, I suppose, the question.

If you experiment, I suggest that you start a bit light. :) From the above posts, it looks like folk often carry around 8lb/4kg +/- 2lb/1kg in their vest. I carry 22lb of lead on my belt but it felt too heavy this year, so will probably drop that to 20lb. 18lb+ seems common in the UK when wearing a 5mm spearo wetsuit. I don't know but I'd think 10lb+ on your belt & 8lb on your vest would probably be ok - i.e. I would think loosing 10+lb by dropping the belt would work reasonably well. Bear in mind that at some depth you will sink no matter what though.

I would be inclined to carry less in the vest - maybe 4/5/6lb - at least to start with. But I find my stretchy rubber RA Marseille belt quite comfortable & secure these days.

Well thanks for the reply better late than never!I've just been using my belt for a while now and I am happy with it apart from when doing long walks to the dive spot.I do have two kg in lower pockets in vest when I do use it balancing my self in the water giving me head up to stop water ingress in snorkel!I'm comfortable now with the weight not struggling to stay down much more relaxed and calm.

BTW If anyone lost their Mares weight vest in Cornwall, check out my post here: Objects found while freediving

Yes, walk-ins with a weight-belt can be a pain (try the direct line into & out of Chapman's Cove ;) ) I find it is easiest to wear it.
