Hello all!
I would like to know what is the meaning of the word Apena,is it a short word(like Scuba)?

Many thanks in advance.

Do you mean 'apnea'?

Apnea = cessation of breathing = breath-holding

It is a word, not an abbreviation.

Like in 'sleep apnea' = sleeping without breathing.

I have answered this elsewhere,

but it is simply a latin word and as Eric had said it means cessation of breathing. Interestingly enough I found in my wifes Italian-English dictionary apnea in the Italian protion. The word was given in a phase and translation "immersione in apnea"= freediving. Freediving was nowhere to be found in the English portion and this is a perfect example of the prominence of this sport in Italy and the lack of press it recieves in most of the English speaking world.

"Apnea" etymology

Sorry to be picky but "apnea" comes from Greek not Latin. The verb "pneo" which means to breathe (literally to "blow air") and the prefix "a-" which suggests cessation of this. The Greek word for breathing is "anapnoe" whereas Latin is "respirare" (or something like that. Fine point but Greek is not Latin
