Miami Spearin' Contest

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
yea yea......he likes to talk smack.....he should respect his elders......he's been doing this for 8 or so months now, and loves the fish stringer....i think maybe he saw one too many euro spearing videos.....don't think he's seen the one where an eel goes for the fish on the stringer and gets a thigh instead......aya el compadre

rofl...I had a pretty horific run in with the jolly green monster, guess its all part of the game

Dude seriously too many lol! The papers were fine, damn case audit sucked =/. Now I have to re-write a paper on the economic impact tourism would have on Cuba 5 years after Castro, assuming capitalism takes over.. go figure haha. Anywho maybe my bud would be down to take his boat to the keys that weekend, I <3 the keys :friday.

Any of you guys ever tried those disposable underwater cams?? I used them once and they were ok, just dont think you can take them too deep lol

p.s .... 7ft Morays are scurry

What is this I hear I like to talk smack? in regards too? ok let's get this clear narizon! You are using an RA as your what, 5th or 6th gun? Meaning it took you about what 6 long years to some what realize what a good product is. Oh I’m sorry I guess I inspired you to get an RA when you saw me handing you that nice cubera that got destroyed by just 1 band. Nariz simmer down; don’t worry about me getting eaten by a shark with my stringer. I know where and when to use my stringer. PS. Why don’t you let me have your mares Cyrano?

steel porque no hiciste el stringer que estaba en el video?

Primero........wannabe bleach character - pajarasco.......yea, it's my 6th gun......for what particular reason? Perhaps because I've always admired the bigger band guns, but never had the money to purchase one - last time I checked, they're much pricier than the typical economic air gun.......yea 6 long years......6 long years of which I was never foolish enough to carry a stringer on my waist.....case in point = youtube......and as for what inspired me finally...I had some cash (ask Alain) if I had more, I'd have foregone the RA and gone straight for a Riffe.......but like you said, 6 long years.....6 long years of info and technique bud .....si lo quieres comprar te lo vendo.....but u gotta replace the orings, piston is pristine, so is the cylinder......

*The Beast*

mira narizon! let me tell you something when you come to the drastic conclusion that people with stringers on their waist are "foolish". 60% of spearos wear their stringers on their belts 2nd not once have I had my stringer on my belt just like I haven't invested on the economic guns that you so much praised! the problem here is that you went over 5 guns to realize something I'm pretty sure if you add at least 3 of those guns you would have by now have a pretty long riffe. Oh i forgot to mention you just stated that every 1 who wears a stringer here is "foolish" lol PS: Steel wears one...

gracias but I don't want to buy that gun, now if you have no use for it( & I know you dont), I'll take . Otherwise, you can keep your broken gun.

When it comes to this activity there isn't much technique.... I see people who do this for survival means.. so plz spare me all your years of techniques and w.e you may have to add to that.

Ahhh the lovers quarrel:inlove......Do you guys work in Lolitas Peluqueria en la ocho y flalerofl...Seriously though all the more reason to settle this in the water...Remember the thread MIAMI SPEARIN' CONTEST....nooo dudes this has gun from school to B-days to trips to the keys to guns to narizes, pajaritos & pajarascos, to farters and stringers...ahhh yes the stringer...indeed I wear it on my belt tried switching over to a speed stringer, then to fish on the float, but after that I cycled back to the fish on my waist...old habits diehard I guess. The best advice I can give a new Spearo is to never try the fish on the waist, go straight to fish on the float, generally IMPO its the "habit" one has that steers you towards thinking its better...I can't stand bringing in my float to attach a fish I always end up with one tangle or another...truthfully for 20+years I either stuffed them in my RG or strung them on...and it has always worked fine, 'cept for a itsy problema I had with a weemoray, but we're all good now. After I got a few fish on a take over to the ice box, empty and repeat, then repeat again:t

So whatup with this contest whatya guys think...any input?

Haha funny you would bring this up. I was thinking about this if we had a large group during the overnight trip lol!!

How would the rules work?? Heaviest fish wins it? What area?? Time frame?? Prizes??........... fish fry?? haha

Oye Mandy......mira, primero, I only ever bought 3 of my guns, new, and never retail......not such a bad deal to me......second, there is technique to it......and there are certainly standards, particularly the art of going after cuberas that are more than 12"..........oh yes, and not being an abusador......If u want to brag about how many cuberas u catch when we go out, by all means go on ahead - never seen u take a pic with them however (hmmmm, that's right 6 barely legal fish and one decent one don't make for a very good photo).....third, steel may use a stringer, and be cool with it.....but as he openly admonished - if ur getting into the sport take up the habit of using a float......did he say something about an eel? yea, that's right......wanna step back to technique for sec? I challenge u to approach any seasoned spearo and say there's no technique, you'd be the laughing stock of the conversation.....now perhaps there isn't that much technique in shooting baby cuberas but is little armandito gonna go for anything more challenging? Show me this weekend bro......as for "sparing you all my years" dude, ur head is so up in the clouds u forget half the crud that comes out of ur mouth......everytime we go fishing, u got something to say about one method, approach, detail, or whatever it may be concerning spearing - It begs the question as to who should spare who......I never even talk about technique, or breathing methods with u cause everyone practices differently - difference between us bud - psychologically, u need some sort of reassurance to continue on spearing the way u do - how do u get it? oh right, u talk to others and stand ur ground on a certain belief u have - there's a wide gap between someone who is dedicated to their belief, and someone dedicated to a course of action bud....stand ur ground man - cool, didn't say not to, just don't initiate a convo with me then get into an argument.....I have more important things to take care of than a debate with u....oye, do me a favor, save the kid stuff for real life papo - the forums aren't for this......

And steel, I'd love to do the tourney......already spoke to Mandy though, couple of nights ago he says he doesn't want to......

Ok, SO LETS GET BACK on track here....enough Back&Fourth BS:rcard...step away from the keyboard and think for a few minutes how we gonna do this...Ideally best time is a weekday (less traffic) but if that don't work out then we'll do a weekend...If the headcount is low then what we could do is reduce the area to make it a bit more challenging and a bit more personal

Mahi's idea on the Elliot trip/contest is also good...but that should be a contest in and of itself...LET ME HEAR SOME INPUT

Andrew Q? Its JP

haha JP!! Whats up dude, small world huh! Been on the water lately?

Steel a weekday would be preferable considering the obvious boat/marina traffic, so I'm go for that plan. Its simply a matter of organization and us not bailing on the plan lol. Im in along with two other spearos.... we'll come up with a worthy team name haha

I think it'd be best to spear either a)upper keys - Islamorad/Key Largo for instance, b)Eliot Key, or c) a bit past Fowey Rocks.......all are good spots, easily accessible, and have good vis.......as for the prize, I'd say the heaviest fish should win.....simple that way......no limit other than bag, so that those who don't win don't aren't also a little down that they didn't spear as many as they could have.....in terms of actually awarding the prize, If I were gonna coordinate it - why not take a poll of all contestants' preferences. That is, give them a choice: mask, suit, gun etc........provided the entry fees cover cost whichever choice comes up most is 1st prize, next to most 2nd etc......also a couple of DB shirts as consolations.....maybe also, prohibit Scuba, or have a separate tourney on the same day......

cheers,
CBeast

Yeah, but I'm still a newbie! I've still got a lot to learn.

Alright....glad we're back on track....lets get some more input as to the way we can do this.

Beast, one of the things I'd like to monitor is quality and quantity of fish...thats the reason for the 3 limit (or less say 2) and so fourth, I'd also like to perhaps tie this into the "fish of the month" feature I'm going to start soon...part of what I'd like to do is make it ongoing, so to speak, not a one shot deal...and keep it in a set area...with some boundaries...prizes can be awarded per shootout, but a final contest with the accumulated points being applied wins the $$$dinero$$$...

Example:
Fish of the month 10 points
Other fish (we''ll make a list and the fish on that list will all be featured as fish of the month) will be assigned points-
Trigger 1
Hog 1
Blue Runner 1
Mango 2
Lane/School 2
Sheep 2
AJ greater/lesser 3
Cuda 3
Margate 3,
Goat 4
Spanish Mackeral 4
Yellow Jack 5
Dolphin 5
King 6
Cero 6
Cobia 7
Porgy 8
Mojarra 8
Wahoo 9
Gag/Black 9
Mutton 9

Anyother fish to add to the list (which I would also feature in fish of the month) what about distribution of points?

3 off each (unless regs limit in which case reg supercede the established 3/person limit)

Most pounds of fish wins a prize and # of bonus points (say 8), biggest fish wins a prize and certain # of bonus points (say 10) applicable towards the last contest...

Last contest add up all the points and winner takes home the $$$loot$$$....

Whatya guys think, gime some input, Ima gettin:martial

Sounds goood. Will this be an individual tourny or will there be a team prize? or both? also is will there be a team max?

dude, I see what ur saying but it's a waste of a day if someone catches their limit and can't continue.......also, say a team member snags 3 blacks.....and the other member sees another, but doesnt snag it - he's missing out on the fun.....I dunno, whatever u guys decide is cool.....what about entry fees?

This really all depends on how the tourney would be held. For example, if in teams then each member should put forth their two best fishes,. If individual then each person should be allowed to weigh in 3 of their best fishes. Of course no illegal fishes and stick to the Florida Spearfishing Fishing Regulations. Bag limits and everything else or disqualification.

All keep in mind you can shoot w.e you want but are limited to a specific # for tourney fishes. Meaning you can enter the tourney and not necessarily go home empty handed? clear enough?

What I would have a problem with would be the prices for a team of spearos who win something. Would it be enough to give them both something? oppose to an individual tourney where you have 1 winner. Consider also 2nd & 3rd place holders!

For Safety Reasons, teams should be highly favored but that's just my opinion

PS: I can be a boat Captain if who ever wants to ride ships in for gas that way those without boats can still feel like they have a chance.

Sorry for late update but you may want to consider only 1 species limit for weigh in. So there is an even odd for every one that doesn't necessarily find two groupers or two huge cudas.

FYI: Key West open spearfishing tournament is May 2,3 ,4 if anyone is interested in coming down. i was thinking about chartering a sportfisher for at least one day and try for a dolphin. (lately they have been slaying dolphin out here) i have a buddy who mates for a captain who used to blue water spear,(now just fishes tournaments) but misses spearing and would love to take us to some of his spots,(this guy knows ALL the spots!) for around a grand a day, including tip fits up to 6, but i think 4 is plenty. anybody down for this? Also if anyone wants to come down with a boat, i got Gps #s for lots of good stuff, and i know my way arond down here, so let me know. Also, when are you guys going to do this tournament in miami?i would love to come up there and check it out somtime, maybe when my boat is done(3 weeks)not in time for Key West open...

Hey man you are more than welcome to come over here & give the tourney handlers a hand with w.e. Weight in, rules, w.e it takes to run the thing correctly and safely. You can even use your boat to take people as long as they ship in if that's ok with you! All I know is that steel would prob appreciate all the help he can get.

I don't really like the whole key west open I hear that you can go pretty far distance wise & use SCUBA, that isn't fair to many spearos who just skindive when they hunt but, then again I am not 100% on the rules for that tournament.
