Hey guys! I am a junior studying welding engineering at Ohio State, and for the summer of 2017, I'll be on an internship in Warren, MI (Detroit metro area). I'm looking for freediving and spearfishing buddies while I'm up there, so if you're interested in putting up with a stranger, I'd love to meet up with some of you guys! I'm not too familiar with dive sites or places to spearfish in MI (although I am familiar with the spearfishing regs), so any advice/dive buddy is greatly appreciated. I'm honestly willing to drive anywhere on the lower peninsula, so distance shouldn't be too much of an issue. In terms of skill level, I'd say I'm intermediate with a static of 3:30 and having the majority of my spearfishing experience in NJ jetties gunning for striper so you can judge which locations are in/out of my bounds (although I'm always anxious to push new boundaries with a good dive buddy!)

Welcome to DB! In the past, we've had a pretty active Great Lakes contingent, some of whom were in Michigan. You may want to check out the USA/Canada subforum or use the forum search. I think a fair number of them are still active.

Hello NiceCatchAustin,

I live in Traverse City and have been getting more serious about diving this past summer. I've not tried my hand at spearing yet but I do want to try it next summer. A dive buddy of mine who used to live in the Keys is wanting to go as well. We usually either go to some shipwrecks (a lot in the area) or set up a dive line and go for depth. As of right now I can comfortably hit 50 feet with a dry static PB of 3:16. Its getting pretty chilly for diving right now w/ a water temp of 57, but I have been getting out a little bit this fall. Trying to get out a few more times before the snow flies and it really starts to get cold.
You should make a trip up this way next summer and do some diving.

Adrian.
