A novel study by Marshall and colleagues indicates that mild dehydration induced by 2 hours of exercise in the heat or by 28 h of fluid restriction, respectively reducing body mass by 2.5% and 2.7%, reduced forced vital capacity (FVC) by 173 and 131 mL. It is postulated that this was consequent to small airway closure and air trapping, given that dehydration increased residual volume (see table below).
Fortunately, administration of adequate amount of fluids rapidly restored lung volumes within 15 to 60 min. Local rehydration of the airways by three 15-min bouts of nebulization did not.
