MN/WI speargun for carp?

i am a student a WSU in winona, mn. i've been doing some spear fishing in mn now for a couple of seasons for rough species which is all that is legal to spear here in mn. right now i have a JBL 4D33 custom. it has double bands and seems like enough power. i bought a double barbed tip that also has a swivel in it but when i shoot fish it still doesn't always go through and it creates a very large hole which sometimes causes it to slip back out and i have also had problems unscrewing even with the baring. i've tried tightening it with pliers, but it still seems to work loose. i can't help but feel like there must be a better gun out there for this, or a way of making a spear shaft that has a point and barb built in without the bulky screw on type. any ideas would be appreciated or brands of recommended guns. sorry if i am already hitting a subject thats been brought up but i couldn't find the exact information that i was looking for.

Carp Killa - I love shooting carp and my favorite gun is the JBL WOODY (3 band) it's perfect for water around here- the other option you could try is get a EURO Gun - they usually have smaller shafts (6mm or 6.5mm) small holes and blast through the fish pretty good. - I would recommend the JBL WOODY - or you could go Comando and get the JBL WOODY MAGNUM - hey DEAD is DEAD - Right? there is no such thing as "OVERKILL"
 
ok well the JBL woody looks good but it looks very close to the JBL 4d33 Custom that i have. it still shoots the same type of spear shaft so i'm guessing it would have similar results as mine. maybe there is a trick or something you know to keeping the spear tips screwed onto the shaft? thanks for the reply.
 
I did go with larger blades on my speartips- I have 4" blades on them and I think the 3 bands helps- I get most of my shots THROUGH the body of the carp. If it doesn't happen to go all the way through- I swim after the carp and pull it all the way through. Then I go for the "Tackle". Another option you could try is use a "Slip-tip" - I don't think they are actually called that, but the ones where the tip actually comes off and just a steel cable is through the fish- just an idea- I've been using a Beuchat marlin 115cm lately and that has a 6.5mm and goes in deep. The fact that it's a 115cm is a little much- But I bought it with one thing on my mind- those "MONSTER PERCH" in lake michigan! whoa, those are freaking huge! I needed something with some range and a small diameter spear.

what about like a 75cm pneumatic spear gun, I've never shot one of these???? i was also wondering what type of wet suit you would suggest for going out at this time of the year? i have not bought a wet suit yet and i have never used a wet suit. i normally just freeze my ass off in the spring for a half hour at a time. i've been looking at 7mm suits, is this necessary or does a 5mm work? i would also like it to be ok during the spring i don't know if a wet suit can be to hot or not but i don't want to be over heated. thanks again. james

We went out today - the water at shore was 30 degrees - we use 5mm "OPEN CELL" interior. The "Open cell" is the most important part of the wetsuits. These wetsuits can be use from Sept/Oct all the way till June- then they tend to be a little to warm- OUR bodies were just fine today- we were in for about 4 hours- our toes got to be cold, so we got out- There are several different suits you can get- you can go custom fit from ELIOS (Home)- or get Spetton, Beuchat from Jimdoe2you or ILDiver might be able to hook you up with a OMER- The green/gray one I have from ELIOS (custom fit) ran me about $270 and that included shipping. If you decide to get a wetsuit from elios - order the booties and 3 fingered gloves also- Great deal and really warm. I'll post pics and more on todays outcome on the other thread.
 
the pics look cool, i still have yet to see a musky while diving. i looked into it. i tried to search open cell wet suit and didn't find anthing. so you guys like the 2 piece suits? what thickness sole booty, heavy sole or medium sole do you recommend?

the pneumatic spear guns...do they have any practicality up here? have you shot one before? i was looking at a 75cm.

JON has a pneumatic spear gun - he seemed to do very well with it at Golden Lake and some local lakes- He is the most knowledgeable person on this site- I'm sure he has a plethora of info for you in you PM box. I like the 2 piece - if your looking mostly for spearfishing get the long john/farmer john style (goes over shoulders) or if your into diving deep and need as much air as possible the long trousers will allow you to take deeper breaths. If you got the money I'd seriously consider getting a ELIOS suit.

The two piece with an open cell suit will allow you to get in and out easier and keep you warmer. A zipper is going to be the "weak" spot letting water through.

On the booties, they are not like scuba boots. 3 or 5mm socks and they have to fit in your fins. If your using scuba fins with a heel strap then the thickness of the sole is up to you really. The more rocks, the more sole you want. But a bootie with a sole will not work in a full foot fin (generally).

Gloves and "Socks" - follow the same guidelines as a wetsuit- I'd go 5mm opencell - and get the 3 fingered gloves- huge difference between the 5 finger and the 3 finger- I have a 5mm open cell sock- and that is what got cold on me last time we went out- my feet. My 3 fingered gloves aren't open-cell - but I was fine. If you are ordering a Elios (by chance) you can order the gloves and socks at the same time- and for a good price.

Not that I am aware of. Most scuba boots have nylon inside. Maybe closed cell on part. What fins are you using? I have not found many warm scuba boots with soles. Freediving specific fins are full foot long fins and the socks/booties do not have a sole on them. If your using scuba fins and boots, a zipper once again lets water in. I'm not sure how scuba fins will work with open cell socks. I'm guessing not great.
 
I can vogue for that Cressi suit as I used to have one- it's very warm. The fold over waist seal also works really well. I have worn it and been completely dry on the inside on dives to 60'. Below 60' there was enough suit compression that some water did start to seep in. I find that to be pretty amazing for a wetsuit.

I can also attest to the warmth of the Spetton socks- they are just about the only thing I use these days. I've owned socks from other companies (OMER, Cressi-sub, Picasso, Esclapez, Elios, and others) but none were as nice as the Spetton 5mm gold lined socks for winter diving in Wisconsin. They even have a thin sole on them for a bit of traction.

My favorite mitts are made by Elios. A pair of 5mm, 3-finger, silver lined, nylon gloves were only $25 and have held up very well. Before that I used Picasso 3-finger, double seal mitts, but they are well over $100 a pair these days.:head 3-finger mitts are the way to go around here.

Check out some of the suits that jimdoe2you has for sale. He could get you into a nice one for diving around here. Also ask him if he has those 3-finger Immersion mitts in yet- they look awesome!

Henderson makes nice stuff, but it's all way overpriced for what you get.

I wouldn't get the 4mm socks...you'll be sorry. I'm thinking of trying some 7mm (I have small feet) & I think I might get by with my larger foot pocketed (if that is a word) fins.
