Hey everyone,
I am going to be living in Hermanus on the Western Cape of SA this year for the months of June, July and August for a research internship. Due to how long I am staying, I have been on the fence about whether or not it's worth it to lug all of my dive gear across the globe with me, to go spearing in a place I dont know much about. I have all the necessary equipment to handle the conditions (I have been in the waters of Cape Town before), but I don't know much about the accessibility of shore diving spots, or what is considered safe/unsafe diving. I have read about the many dangers of diving in this area, but I also know it is one of the richest and most diverse marine ecosystems on earth, with an awesome array of endemic species. I would hate to pass up an opportunity to dive and hunt in such a cool spot, but I also have to be realistic about my options and safety.
If any locals, or those familiar with the area, could fill me in on what the shore diving scene is like or spearfishing around this area in general, it would be much appreciated. Also, I searched online for a dedicated Western Cape spearo communtiy/website but couldnt find any. I assume there is one out there, so if anyone could point me in their direction that would be awesome.
Safe diving, cheers.
Lino
