Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I speared a few and to get a better holding shot i point to the open mouth and shot as if the spear would come out at the end of it (it never does as it is never straight) and in this way you'll probably hit the spine. It's more of a sport to fish them: In the Azores we find a spot with some round rocks and that has a nice hole to chum. We just chum using fish guts or octupus "ink" letting drip in the hole. they will come to the hove and then we just put a big hook (with a ~0.5m line and a grip) in their mouth and then just pull (sometimes we use a bow to cacth them). they some times come with the full body out of the water after the chum. unfurtunatly i don't have pictures of the process (yet) as we all get involved but i have some of the catches that i can post. I'll try to get some pic the next time.
The meat is very good!
