My Catch (first)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Congrats on your first catch Misterdave! :)

I know why a few of the 'old timers' have given you some grief but I'd hasten them to remember their first spearing experience!

I can say for sure that if I'd come out with a nice little pollack and a big wrasse after my first trip, I'd have been utterly ecstatic! It took me about 5 trips to get anything half as decent as that!

Obviously, as we all get more experienced, we become more selective, to the point where 99.999% of experienced spearo's would pass over the fish you took but that's just learning. We all have to start somewhere and personally, I think you've done damn well.

On a note about wrasse, they are very friendly, slow growing fish - if the one you took was about 4.5lbs, it was probably close to 20 years old. For these reasons, spearo's do not actively target them as they can be fished out of an area very quickly and regardless of what people say, they are not the best tasting fish.

Spearfishing is a small community and it's always better to educate rather than alienate people - if you've got questions on any aspects of spearing, drop me a PM :)

With all due respect if your going to make a special thread for yourself your going to attract some attention :)

I'm hardly an old timer but i do indeed remember my first fish , also a Wrasse on my home made pole spear (never shot another one after that). I think the first picture I posted on the Cornwall thread was a 4lb Bass though. After reading the forum I had a good idea of what reaction to expect from my various catches prior to that ;)

Misterdave you’re on a learning curve and you’ll soon see that it’s best to wait for the better fish to come along.
We all started somewhere and in truth have all shot small fish and Wrasse; it’s just one of those things that you’ll grow out of.
And after this lot of heathens have finished giving you jip I dare say you’ll have learnt that lesson.
Carry on with the spearing and carry on with posting on here as all this will soon enough be forgotten.:)

Not sure if that was meant for me, but just to clarify I was not blaming my speargun which is fine (the 3yr old bands could do with replacing) I blaming me for being overexicitable and not actually aiming.

If was not directed at me then sorry.

One of the main reason's I dont shoot Wrasse is they are almost like shooting fish in a barrel, no challenge so to speak. The largest wrasse I have seen 4-6lbs have no fear at all, if i lie in the weed they come straight up to me and only tend to swim off if i move towards them. Personally i like a challenge but maybe that is just me.

No not directed at you when i said tools i mean fish it was a metaphor sorry for the confusion

regarding making a special thread I didn't understand the whole posting on this forum ettiquette on another forum i've used you posted separate threads regarding separate things not a long stream I am now enlightened, I wasn't asking for special attention. The learning curve (regarding; posting, wrasse and my amazingly tasty pollack) has reached it's peak I think.... for now? :D so Bass it is, no doubt it will be a shandy bass.

I get where you are coming from on other forums it is generally post a new topic for a what you are asking/showing. As the cornwall thread is usually active most days then there is always something happening.

Bass, Mullet then Pollack (oh and then Edible or Spider crab and muscles if the fish are scarce and still fancy seafood) are my current order of prefence/tastyness (this is my current personal taste) and no doubt is not everyone's.

Although that's all dependant on how they are cooked !

And always partial to a shandy bass :friday

And then if/when you get into night diving Red Mullet, Plaice, Sole or John Dory (if you are lucky) not got a preference on them, like them all equally atm.

You officially don't no how to cook a wrasse so many spearo said it is to bony well all fish got bones i have been shoting wrasse for 26 years and even converted professional fisherman to like them who use to said that wrasse was not a good fish don't blame the fish it is your cooking skill i no few top spearo who like me enjoy eating wrasse so guys stop blaming the fish once for all
A bad workman always blames his tools

Next time misterdave put your next to your gun or your fin it will give a better perspective of the size of the fish
Thats good, but now can you tell me how to cook those two wrasse that are in my ice box,i dont want them to go to waste.thanks

Sounds nice, do you think it would work with Asian style favours like garlic chilli spring onions lemongrass tumeric lime pak choi and some soy sauce, cooked the same way? Ollie I'm back in exeter early October, fancy some spearfishing around then? What's the autumn like in devon?

Yo misterdave Nice catch.

Dont let these people shout you down.

"I suggest you remove the photo's immediately as what you caught there is undersized, minimum size for a pollack is 30 cm."....worst way of kindly informing him of the legal fish sizes! haha

Good luck with future fishing. And well done of your first catch! bet it was a buzz!

:)

This sunny spell has been great,on the Falmouth side lately the surf report has been around 3 foot but ive been going up to the mouth of the Helford river and comeing out with gray mullet and last week a pretty big bass, also i saw but didnt spear some strange fish,it was like a flat fish exept swam the correct way up almost round quite tame,it was quite a way below me so didnt get a real close look. The sea there is calm and visability pretty good.
I ate gray mullet for the first time the other day and liked it,it really isnt that much different to bass when wrapped in tin foil with lemon slices in side it and then baked.
