Hi guys,

Im wanting to make a triple rubber 140 mid handle speargun shooting a 8-8.5mm shaft.

For wood choice im chuckling between rosewood, teak and Tasmanian oak.

So far Tasmanian oak seems like a winner, what do you guys think? Thank you

note* - im based in Australia

Tasmanian oak is just a generic term these days for timber from several species. A couple are ok for spearguns, especially if coated in a good two pack poly, a couple arent so good & absorb water & swell rapidly. All of these types can be found bundled together in various hardware stores so you need to be able to pick the correct one & know which ones not to use. Rosewood in Aust is usually sourced from PNG & is good for spearguns, it can also have lots of figure & colour & is about a third the price of proper Burmese teak. You could also look at Australian beech, this is usually avaliable, easy to work & also priced similar to rosewood. Most importantly, use a good epoxy for your laminations, avoid cheaper glue alternatives, the correct epoxys & fillers are the way to go.:) I'm sure you have a local club & spearos who would be willing to help.(y)
