Heya, I am a Canadian and planning on returning to Canada this year after spending the last 3 years on a small island south Taiwan called Orchid Island. I went there to live with my wife who is from there and we tried to do some business. I was in the family so they made me partake in all sorts of fun aboriginal tribal ceremonies and water related activities. Like spearfishing at night and the flying fish seasonal catch and the large boat launch ceremony. I had a home made speargun that was made by a local village drunk and I bought it off him for $3 dollars because he was too old to use it and he just wanted some rice wine. My gun was a night-gun being shorter than the day guns, I mainly went out at day with it because I was busy working at night. I speared a lot of tropical fish with it and small octopods. Here is some pics of my time there. I want to come back to Canada, living on a small tropical island with aboriginals is awesome, the life is awesome and the ocean there on Orchid Island (Lanyu) is fantastic. I don't have an underwater camera sadly. Orchid island has some of the cleanest crystal clear water in the world and the spearfishing is fantastic.

Here is a link to my blog, there will be some very new pictures in the next few days that are mostly landscape and life shots etc that I just took when I was there over Chinese New years.

I highly advise going to Orchid Island for diving and snorkelling. It is illegal for Chinese people and foreigners to spearfish though. But, because I was in local aboriginal family and knew everyone on the island nobody minded to much nor said anything(me being the only foreigner who actually lived and worked on the island except for a German bird studier) . There isn't much regulation or law there. The aboriginals still follow their local conservational traditions and do not over fish and allow things to grow a bit during certain months.

If anyone has any questions...ummm...shoot!
