Mysterious....object?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Interesting find. I think a mine would be considerably larger. Looks a lot like a US GI's steel helmet, has the same metal colour.

That's what I thought. Looks like an old school "brain bucket"--a WWII era steel combat helmet. Not sure about the "horn" on top. German maybe? Or just an artifact of the growth?

Ever figure it out?

Can rule out mine--not big enough by far. Helmet--maybe. Would have rusted to nothing relatively quickly though.

Pretty sure it is steel grey, it may have been blue once.
Next time I get out there I'll grab the measurements and do up a nice drawing.

Would it have paint left on it if it has been there long enough to be crudded into the reef?

Nope not yet. I might get back out there in summer with someone that knows a bit more about things like this. If I find out I'll let everyone know.

A lot of people have suggested hitting it with a hammer.

If you do, don't forget the video camera.

I am sure "You Tube" has a section "Hitting a Strange Object Underwater Fail"

My knickname at a biannual shooting event is "Kaboom" and has to do with a catastrophic failure of a naval cannon being fired. No one seriously injured--except my pride but could have been...fatal. :naughty:blackeye Don't hit with a hammer and really--until you're sure what it is don't dig it out--many explosives deteriorate with time and exposure to salts and become very unstable. Also I don't want to see the red bubbly cloud on Youtube.

it is part of commercial fishing gear, sometimes glass often metallic. We recover a lot of those while fishing high seas, most prized ones are glass balls. Can't remember what are they used for but there was some explanation from my fellow skipper, I think it was part of driftnet, outlawed gear but was extensively used some 15-20 years ago. When I was fishing in late 90's early 2000's there were still a few free floating lost balls in the ocean, I would imagine some of those cracked and sunk. No mistery here

I second the fishing equipment. Similar looking floats were often strewn about on the beaches around japan.

Naaaah--I vote for alien egg.

Did it hatch? It could be waiting, lurking, hoping for a host on a new planet...ready to become the next world leader and prepare the way for an invasion.

Send them to Washington DC--if they're brain suckers they'll starve to death.
