I dont knw if i should hook a floatline to the shaft or the gun i have a jbl crabine that was given to me by a friend i mainly hunt on reefs no open see but i eventually want to go for dolphin

keyword is "eventually". you want to have a flexible setup that will allow you to hunt the reefs and open water without having to do many changes. Most spearos have a leader on their spear. that gives you the option to attach the spearline either to the gun, or do a breakaway setup. there are many details that im sure i left out, and use the search option and look break away setup when you decide its time to head out into open water.
but as a rule of thumb rig your float to your gun, it costs more than a new spear, and remember that a bruised ego is a lot better than a broken walet.
