Hiya, I'm looking to get into freediving and remembered this place exists, so I signed up. I'm in New York City and there surprisingly doesn't seem that much around here, so any recommended training locations or meetups would be greatly appreciated. I have no formal training but have done a 4'30 underwater static.

Hello! I just moved over to NYC so not really sure what’s here. I think you’d want to start with a certification before doing any training though.
You cannot swim in any of the waters around NYC. It is one of the busiest shipping ports in the world. It also has incredibly strong currents.
You need to go to Connecticut, or farther up 95, to find diving sites. Check out the Thimble Islands. It is about 30-40 min drive up 95. It is also on the train route (with some walking involved). There are some great diving spots around those islands and you might even find a shipwreck and Pirate's treasure. LOL. The locals swear it is true.
Some famous pirates used to use the Thimble Islands as a kind of hangout. That much is true. The rest of the stories about treasure are most certainly false. But, maybe you can find a single, gold doubloon, some pirate dropped.
