New record in 16x50

Yesterday, on March 24th, 2012, there was an FFESSM (French CMAS branch) competition in Massy, near Paris. It included also the speed apnea discipline 16x50m. Brice Lequette created a new best world's performance with the time of 10'49"34.

Before 2011 the world records were not officially sanctioned, so each such performance when done with the presence of judges was considered a world record, but since last year 16x50m became one of the new official CMAS disciplines, hence proper sanctioning and an international status of the event is required for the WR status. I am not yet quite sure whether this record will be recognized as a WR, so possibly it will remain just a national record and the best world's performance.

Apnea.cz did not receive the complete results yet, but will add them to the ranking as soon as available.

At the last WR of Brice of 11'10", the video casted some doubts on the regularity of the performance, since the start did not appear being coherent with the rules telling the athlete has to touch the wall at the moment of immersion. I requested a video from this event, and if available I will post it here later.

In any way, regardless of the regularity, it is an amazing performance, and I send my congratulations to Brice!

So according to witnesses, including one of the organizers, the performance was clean. There was a rope at 2m from the starting wall, and judges watched up that the new 16x50 rules by CMAS are respected. Currently I have no video, but will post if I find one.

Amazing time, do you know how long he paused in between dives? And how fast he swam?

My club mates told he rested around 10s at the beginning, and around 15s at the end, but I do not know whether they really measured it, or just estimated.

Anyone accepting bets for breaking the 10' milestone?

So he must have been swimming quite fast, allow me to do a quick calculation:

10'49" - 25"(assumed lap swim time) = 10'24"
624" / 15 = 41.06"
So he's starting at about 41 second time intervals. With 10 seconds surface time he was swimming about 31s / 50m.
Does that about match your info Ivo?

Great stamina.

Maybe if I'm rested and my swim technique is better I'll give it a go. However without my favorite Russian Coach it will be impossible as the CO2 really screws up your mental willpower.

I'd tell rather 28.84s for the 50m in average, but as I wrote, I am unsure whether the rest times given by my friends are real or just estimated:

10'49"= 649s
average rest = (10+15)/2

( 649s - 15*(10+15)/2 ) / 16 = 28.84s

I have done quite a bit of 16x50m, but mine was always FRC with tiny training fins. Murat managed under 18' in those conditions, my best was 18:46, obviously the times are not comparable to an advanced monofin and taking a full breath, but under 11 minutes is amazing!

So still no full data or a video of the swim, but some more reports from people present at the competition. They tell he rested 9s at the first few laps, and then rested longer but swam faster at the end - the last lap(s?) were under 25s.
