its a good point of contact i suppose. Bit of a noob question..do I tie some sort of string and weight to it?

I've got one of those and think its excellent for long swims. I've tied some floating line to mine and connect the other end to my gun. But some people prefer tying line to it and using a drop weight connected to the other end so then if you find a reef, hole or something else you want to fish around then you drop the weight down and dive around your float.

If fishing in tide it is advisable to connect the line to your gun as mentioned so then if you drop your gun you won't lose it

if I could attatch a fly rod reel to it, attatch the line to my gun and then use that as a sort of reel system, plenty of line, and easily rolled back onto the spool when not in use. what u think?

You could do, but I dont know how easy it will be to operate underwater (possibly in a swell). With all your gear you will find that the more simple, the better as there is less to go wrong. I tried a diving reel before, that I cloves a sliding plate like a lever that releases the reel drum, then if you slide it across it locks it in place preventing any more line coming out. I thaught this was really good until I used it and it was a right pain in the a@#e so ditched it.

The most common method is a line wonder. I can post a pic o my set up if you like, it involves the line wrapped around the float length wise. I've tied a caribeaner clip onto the front of the float. I unwind as much line as I want then clip it through the clip. Then if I need more I just unravel more line (without disconnecting it from the clip) then pull it through the clip. It has worked very well for me from depths of 1m down to 15m : )
