Just seeing if any would be interested in a Spearfishing Outing at the OUTLET in Madison, WI at Lake Monona.

It would be January 1st (duh) at 10am till 1 or 2pm-ish. Praying that the Discharge Pipe is on Full Blast! and Super Vis! Just want to see who is interested.

It would be a great Start to the 2008 Rough Fish Contest. :martial

-Carp Fear Me!-

I wish I could say I was in...But mama's prolly gonna pop before then! Besides the no "open cell" yet factor. I'll get my Diveskins open cell ordered in a few months...hopefully before "ice off" on the lakes.

Scott...From pics and vids I've seen of "the outlet" - the whole 2008 contest could be won there in ONE or TWO good days!

Pinggene....I hope you make it to "the outlet" before "Carp Master Whopperhead does!" Or atleast with him! rofl

Good luck & have fun guys!

I'm sure at that time the visibility would be a bit better with the turn-over completed. I'm not sure yet what my plans are on new year's day but if all works out, I'll be there & in the water.

Some things are going to have to change for me to go. I need slightly thicker gloves and thicker booties. I can prolly get the booties, but the gloves might be tight.

Scott,

I won't know until I get closer to the date. Have to see what is planned with the Family.

I was out for a run on Saturday and went by the outlet. They had the pipe on full blast and the vis was quite good. Ice was melted out to the wooden barriers and there were plenty of birds around. What I didn't see was any fish- at least from the overlook.

I decided to give it a shot yesterday. The vis wasn't that great, but better than last week. There were quite a few fish there including some nice musky and northern. Ice was melted out quite a ways, but I didn't have any of the really good vis I saw the day before. :(

I managed to shoot a couple of carp and continued on with my quest to try and get a musky to eat out of my hand- no luck on that yet, but maybe by the end of the winter. ;)

hey ill be there if something doesnt come up like work but hopefully i ahve something by then if anybody knows of anything please let me know

That's a nice carp Jon- Have you ever tried feeding fish "Cheese Whiz"? I have a cousin that was scuba diving in Florida and the Guide with her gave her a can of the stuff and she said the fish went crazy for it. That would be kinda cool- I wouldn't have the heart to feed them and then shoot them in the head though............Or would I MMMMMUUUUUAAAAAHHHHHHHH! :D

I've fed fish before, but we usually went with something more natural- like sliced open clams from the lake bottom.

I've heard pretty bad things about feeding fish cheese wiz- like they get constipated and die since it's not a normal part of their diet.:naughty

Jon

OH! good thing I havn't tried it! That's good to know- I wonder if that guy in FL knows this. do you cut the clam in pieces or just the whole thing?

i've seen pictures of people feeding fish canned vienna sausages (little hot dogs) which turned into a bit of a feeding frenzy.

In California, while freediving, we opened a bag of frozen peas...It was crazy all the fish we had around...

Not sure if that would work around here, but it sure was cool in CA.

At Devils Lake in Wisconsin I've fed the Smallmouth Bass live crayfish I've caught from under rocks...After awhile the Smallies were practically like dogs waiting there for you to turn over a big rock, & then...BAM! If there WAS a crayfish there - he was'nt there anymore! The bass would just smash 'em!!!...Pretty cool.

Frozen peas? No...Thats just not right! :yack

I obviously WON'T be at the outlet on New Years Day...Atleast not the one you guys are thinkin' about!!!!rofl

There is a very good chance I'd be on board. The only limitation is the extent of the festivities the evening before. As it stands, I've got no plans that are likely to beat diving.

I'd be coming from just north of Milwaukee if anyone would like to carpool.

I was talking to a guy at work, he was up at lake Mendota and stopped by the outlet on Christmas Day and it was off and everything was frozen over. I had talked to him about it before because his sister lives on or near the lake there. But he decided just to have a look and it was fozen over completely. I hope they have it fired up on the 1st for you guys.

I was there today and it is frozen solid!:head

I saw it freeze over with skim ice a few times last year when they were working on the plant, but this ice is so thick you could drive a 4-wheeler on it.

It was open, as well as half the lake, when I last dove there a couple weeks ago, but now the only openwater around here is the Yahara river where it connects Mendota to Monona. This is a nice paddle in winter, if you have a kayaking drysuit, but it's kind of shallow to dive. The water is clear and you can see the entire bottom from the banks and bridges.

Lake Michigan was open as of earlier today. My father-in-Law got out to do a few hours of side-scanning Thursday and said the lake was flat calm and clear, but we had some east winds during that storm yesterday.

IF your looking to dive there I would suggest South Shore yacht club- it's the easiest access to water and you can dive under the slips to look for lost tools, wallets, and dead cats- yes, I have found all of those things there in the past.

Another option is McKinley Marina, but south Shore has a much easier access. Diving the outside of the Marina, along Government Pier, is also a nice dive as there are many access ladders built into the side of the pier. I have climbed them in full scuba, during the winter, in the past and with freediving gear it would be a cinch. IF the wind and waves are right I've even done dives out there where we swim out till we get cold and then climb up onto a passing ice flow. Once on the iceberg we just ride it back to shore- and step onto the rocks where we end up next to our cars in the parking lot. It doesn't get much easier than that.:friday

If you want to throw a tank on, Toller, my father-in-law has a charter on New Year's day and another one next Saturday. These are scuba only as drysuits are required in the winter, as well as doubles, a pony bottle, or H-valve set-up. It's not that the water is too cold for a wetsuit, just that your miles out on the lake and the Coast Guard is of little help that time of year so drysuits are required above and below the water for safety's sake. In 24 years of winter charts there's never been a problem, but you still need to be prepared.

All of the above sounds like too much of a hassle for me this year so I might just sleep in a go for a long run in the snow.

Thanks for the input JON - I'm not sure who all is interested in doing a dive on New Years- It's sounding like the outlet might not be on for that day- I plan on going to Madison on Monday- I'll swing by the outlet and see how it looks- otherwise- what do you all think about Lake Mich? TOL? bjpete? I'm pretty much up for anything- I wouldn't mind getting some good video in CLEAR water- But I also want to see fish- What about the discharge in Milwaukee into the big lake? anyone every try there? I saw on lake link that some guys were catching alot of fish there. couple days away- need some input.

I've dove the water intakes for the city before and they are huge! I'm talking 20' tall and bigger than a good sized house. They form a hexagon shape on the bottom if you're going over with a side-scan unit- as you can see in the picture.

From what I know they have been illegal to dive, unless your working for the city doing a video survey of them ;), ever since 9-11. They are also pretty far out into the lake- we're talking miles these days. They used to be in closer, but ever since the crypto problem a few years ago:yack, the city was forced to spend millions to extend them further out into the lake. Since I was one of the unlucky soles who got sick in that mess, I appreciate the extra pipe the put in. ;)

There are some other intake/outlet pipes from the University that I have dove, but they are only accessible by boat and are pretty small in comparison. There are a few shallow wrecks that you can hit, but diving the marinas has always been the best bet for winter, shore, dives in Milwaukee. They have easy access, great parking, interesting junk on the bottom, and one of the better bets for finding fish- although I wouldn't hold your breath on seeing too many musky this time of year.

So, you would suggest diving the marina in Milwuakee - like the SSYC- I'm sure TOL is up for that- anyone else that is planning on diving on the 1st of the year- chime in. Otherwise- we may change plans. Say SSYC at 10am (South Shore Yatch Club) Milwuakee. What say ye?
