Im very new to freediving but have researched for years. Been kayaking for a couple years now and will be outfitting it for freediving la jolla when I get the hang of it. Question is, I have a new three prong and was wondering if there were any good shallow dives that I could practice at, buddy mentioned jetties but where would be a good jetty to start? Dont wanna give away secret spots, but whats a good place to practice?

I can't say I know any spots in particular, but I'd say near any of the piers on a calm day. O'side or OB might work out well. I've seen plenty of people catch some good stuff fishing from there.

I'm not going to name any spots out of respect for those that know exactly where I'm speaking of....

There is a popular longboard spot that holds A LOT of Halibut between PB and LJ that may prove to very productive for you. Another good spot to explore is just outside the breakers at probably one of the the most prolific shorebreak spots in the area. You can find a good mix of sand & reef here and you can venture North or South along the reefs and consistently find some new stuff. You're not gonna land too many fatties here but if you are new to the game, you aren't gonna jump right into the big leagues anyways. Lotsa Calicos, Sandies, and Butts are what you can mostly expect. That is unless you eat Perch. If so, you'll find more than a fair share for any mortal to enjoy. Not this guy though....

Good Luck!!!

A hui hou
