Hi all,

My brother and I are new to free diving and want to try fishing with spearguns.
We got mask snorkel and fins. Not the best but they work. If we find out we don’t like it we’re not out a lot of money. My question is can you shoot any size bluegills or crappies?
If no then how do you pick them, the legal size. You can’t measure them and throw them back.
Anyway thanks for the help. Hope to get out soon.

In Wisconsin, You can shoot a combination of panfish as long as it's no more than 25. EXCEPT in LAKE MICHIGAN where you can only shoot 5 perch. There is no size limit. And you can shoot as many Rough Fish as you would like. Just probably shouldn't unless they are Common Carp.

Thanks for the info.
I'm getting some teek wood from my sister tomorrow, were going to try a sling. They look easy to make but I've read there harder to use.
We like a challenge.
We've bow fished for years and wonted to try this. We checked out your videos on youtube. Very cool.

Slings are awesome! If you get good like JON- then that is really all you'll ever need. I seen him take carp with them.

I've slacked on the videos this year. But, That's ok- the videos I put out now are slightly better. I put more effort into them. I will have a video or 2 from the upcoming Palooza.

Pole spears are also very easy to make. A tip from a bowfishing arrow, a 5/8" graphite or stainless steel shaft, a small amount of parachute cord and a loop of surgical tubing (or a pre-made pole spear rubber you can find online for about $8) are all you need to get started. That's what my pole spears are made of :). All materials are obtainable at a hardware shop. Epoxy or ferrultite arrow glue will secure the tip to the shaft. Drill a hole in the butt end of the shaft to slip the parachute cord through. There's a good video on making your own polespear bands courtesy of ILDiver:
