Yes I have tried to explain that diving with somebody else means that you need to worry about them spearing you and that also within two minutes of being in the water you will probably lose each other anyway. I only do short breath holds and stay near shore at night so I reckon it's safer than diving in the day.

There are places to fish around Abersoch, I've heard of people fishing around the old lifeboat station, though I've not seen fish there. I think there are other places, but you need to be careful due to the high amount of boat traffic in the bay. Have a look at Google earth for reefs in and around the bays in the area. Run a search on the forum for Abersoch, I'm sure there'll be plenty of info.

The general consensus is that a 75cm is best for N Wales, though if the vis is poor you might be better with something a bit shorter, or a bit longer if the vis is good. 75cm sits in the middle, and is what I use

Help Guys Please
Hi AA
Ok, it might seem a bit obvious but its not best time of year to be starting. as it gets cold, the fish tend to move away and the storms move in, so its slim pickings apart from scallops :)
maybe wait until spring before giving it a go?
Re kit, then ideally you will need a spear fishing or free dive wet suit - these are made to keep you warm for the long periods you will likely be in the water. take a look on the cressi website as a starter for ten.
you also need boots, fins, gloves, mask, snorkel a weight belt (you need a lot of weight to get to the bottom with a 7mm wet suit - even more if you are just diving shallow as it sounds) A float can be useful sometimes to mark you position if there is a lot of boat traffic about,
Finally Something called a stringer to put your fish on and of course a gun. I use a Rob Allen 800 which seems to do the trick, but echo all the other comments above.
Regarding where to go, do your homework as in previous posts, start easy rocky coves etc and watch out for very strong currents at some headlands. rising tide often offers better viz as does any week where the weather has been calm. needless to say know your limits!!

What Foxy says is cool and don't go blowing big bucks on kit ! think we all got bits of kit you can use/try /have .read through this years thread and ALL of the last few years threads lots of questions will be answered make notes of places ! .times tides weather etc wind direction from the few days leading up to the day your planing to go.look at moon phases how big tides are going to be too.

Thank you guys
All good advice! Also lastly but not leastly , make sure you familiarise yourself with the legal size and quota of what you are allowed to take!! There is a good book called freediving and foraging for food by Ian Mcdonald. Really emphasizes on the sustainability and being a responsible part of the ecosystem, something I believe is very much a part of our sport.

Yeah I've seen that book on a website. I've also been on the abersoch anglers website and it has a size chart on there

That reminds me .You will get cold , you will drink and breath lots of cold salty water ,probably throw up quite a bit ,then get out ,freeze ya nuts off even more ,while you fall into the sand smelling of piss trying to get out of a straight jacket style wetsuits after seeing nothing ,never mind hitting anything after a four hour round try trip and having spent a months wage on getting a speeding ticket from the north wales police .its fun!
