Nylon Thermic Pile vs Open cell inside

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
those gloves look nice, I may try a pair when these wear out:
Mares Gloves 5 mm Trilastic. Accessories Gloves, Scubastore.com, buy, offers, scuba

they are the best i have bought so far, I get cold hand in all others. The opencell cuffs tuck into and seal into the wetsuit arms perfectly, no water exchange

Have the same gloves. The wrist seal really works nicely (even in cnf) and the 3 mm palmside makes operation of camera etc. much easier.

A tip for those of you with cold feet. I only use 1,5 mm toe socks in my hyper. For cold water diving I have 5 mm opencell socks that I have cut the tip off and then just roll over the outside of the footpocket. Keeps my feet warm in 8 C water for about an hour.

I use the elios 3 finger mitts and they rock. Sometimes I put glove liners in them and tuck them into my suit -they they pretty much stay dry to 15 meters or so. Lately I've been putting them over my suit (smoothskin) and they seem to work really well.

I've been using a 5 mil suit year round - with a 1.5 mil titanium lined vest underneath. Works well as long as I do plenty of monofin sprints. For long, low-energy dives I use a 6 mil top with the vest.

This is an interesting question - to me anyway. Have a read of this thread. http://forums.deeperblue.com/wetsuits/80555-question-about-lined-suits.html

On the thread Dave has linked you can find 4 pages of discussion, the conclusion is not so clear as some of the opinions on this thread!
As example here is a quote from a leading wet suit manufacturer ...

Hello,

Thank you in advance for this contact and about your indications, we can suggest you several solutions:

FIRST: You want a tailor made suit, thickness 5mm, to use for spearfishing & scubadiving, complete of jacket closed with hood incorporated + long john trousers.

SECOND: your preference are for:

- easy to wear (in this case the lining inside or coating inside will be the best)

- elasticity

- medium density rubber to use also for deep divings

- Color Camo

- not necessary the wrists and ankles seals because on tailor made suit will not have a lot or water inside and will be more easy to wear, more durable and also reversible! (can wear on both side)

OPTIONS:

1) Suit 5mm New Black coating cell inside / Camouflage Brown lining outside (see photo Carlos) neoprene Heiwa medium density Price Euro 249,00 (include chest pad and knee pads) this is Top-model for spearfishing and scuba-diving near the rocks, very very warmth, aderent to the body, elastic and good also for deep divings, but also very very slippery to get into. £193

2) Suit 5mm Smoothskin Black Camouflaged oneside (see photo Elios Camo) / Nylon elastic Green inside Neoprene Heiwa Price Euro 203,00 This is a new model, very elastic, easy to get into like a t-shirt, fast dry outside the water, more durable than unlined suits, low-water resistance and reversible (see photo 4). (you can use for freediving the smoothskin outside and for scuba-divings the lining outside) £157

3) NEW Suit 5mm nylon standard green olive inside / Camouflage Spearo lining outside (see photo New Mimetic) neoprene Ecoline soft density Price Euro 190,00 (include knee pads) Just arrived, this is an ultra soft rubber, comfortable, easy to wear like a t-shirt, very very durable and reversible. (can wear on both side) £147

4) Suit 5mm nylon elastic green inside / Camouflage Brown lining outside (see photo pesca 2) neoprene Heiwa medium density Price Euro 224,00 (include chest pad and knee pads) this is the best seller for spearfishing and scuba-diving near the rocks, elastic, ver comfortable, easy to get into, durable and reversible. (can wear on both side) £174

There's no way I could get away with 5-finger wet gloves in winter- my hands were frozen too many times back in my ski-patrol days. I need wet mitts or dry gloves.

Here's a few photos to show what I use.

Picasso 3-finger mitts in 5mm. they have double seals on the wirst and are pretty much water proof. The trigger finger is cut tight to fit into a speargun, but I find that it freezes out my index finger pretty fast.

Elios 3-finger mitts, in 5mm, with silver coated cell on the inside and nylon on the outside. THis pair is about 4-5 years old and still is holding up pretty well. Next time I get a set I will buy them a size larger so my finger tips don't get squeezed. For $25 they are the best deal around.

DUI dry gloves. These are for the really cold water- or scuba diving in a drysuit. The seal is on the wrist of the glove so you can use them with a wetsuit. They have built in fleece liners. This is about as warm as it gets- short of a pair of Viking Lobster gloves which would cost more than your whole wetsuit. These are fine for polespearing or using a slong, but the fingers are so bulky I can't get them into a speargun or use my camera controls. Make sure the latex seal goes under your wetsuit sleeve or they will flood and be useless- this happened to a friend a lent them to one time.

My current socks are 5mm Spettons. The are gold coated opencell on the inside and nylon on the outside- with nylon soles to make it easier to walk. I used to use elios 5mm opencell/nylon socks, but they have a seam that goes across the forefoot that can get rubbed raw after a few hours in fins. The opencell soles are also VERY slippery when walking around- as in your foot slips around inside the sock when you walk.

My new wetsuit should be here by the end of the week. I am dropping back down to a 5mm because my 6mm is overkill for the amount of time I can stay in due to cold hands and feet. Water last weekend was 34F degrees- that must be something like 1C. I was in for over an hour before my fingers finally froze out- body was still pretty warm in my 6mm with no vest underneath.

Another question regarding diving in very cold water, how does long (cressi gara 3000) bi fins react in cold water, do they crack easily or are they reliable ? I rather not experience it while im down at 10 meters :)

I don't know about cracking, but they do stiffen up quite a bit vs. warmwater.

Jon

The chances of Cressi fins cracking is probably zero. They can get fading white lines at stress points, but you could cut one almost in half and it would still not spread the crack quickly.

We just got our suits 3 days ago and so far there have been 3 days diving :)

We ended up with 6mm Opencell inside/nylon outside, waist high pants and a 3mm vest.
Everything works great and warm enough, the D4´s showed -3 degrees celsius at 9m and 0 at the surface with ice floating around.
We need better gloves and socks thou then we will test them for real how long we can last without getting too cold.

Thanks for all the answers in the thread :)
