Odd static training exercise?

How's the technique different Eric? Are the muscles involved different?

The technique is radically different, calves, ankles, core, vs. lots of quads for the monofin.

Efficient monofin technique for freediving is very different from finswimming style monofin technique. However, with the Orca, the efficient technique is more similar to finswimming technique (not identical). I would say that a deep freediver and a finswimmer, learning the Orca -- the finswimmer would learn it faster. However both of them would lack the reflex of flicking the ankles back and forth on each stroke, which is a hard habit to learn but essential.

Interesting... Didn't realise finswimming technique was so different than Freediving monofinning technique. Is this just for depth or also applies for DYN?

Simos, just download some Youtube footage of finswimmers and compare it to freediving WR video's. For instance there is NO kick 'n glide in finswimming. But it does not end there, there is also a difference between deepdiving and dynamic, where in Deepdiving the undulation is usually much bigger.

Question, since we're off topic, considering the same depth and dive time, how does the nacosis compare diving full lungs vs packed vs FRC?

I can compare FRC vs. packing for narcosis. I have never got any narcosis on an FRC dive. The max I did was 72m, but a 72m dive with packing and I get significant narcosis. During recreational dives in cold water to 40-45m, I get significant narcosis with packing, no narcosis on FRC.

I am uncertain if narcosis will ever appear at any depth on an FRC dive. Maybe if I get good with the DOL-Fin Orca I can try a 100m FRC dive and see if there is narcosis.

Anyway, in that sense a deep FRC dive is actually less scary than a deep dive with packing. A deep FRC dive just feels like a long dynamic apnea, with a danger of blackout at the end. A deep dive with packing seems like an otherworldly battle with the body not obeying my commands and my head buzzing and dizzy and confused. Totally different experience.
