I prefer braided shooting line myself, but if I do use mono I detest crimps. Just seems wrong squeezing a line like that, of course it works when done right, but when done wrong you might as well take a pair of pliers to your mono.
Anyway, as Mart says, I use a different way of securing mono. Whipping. Use a strong whipping thread, plenty of turns, and blob the end of the mono with a lighter to prevent it pulling through. You can rub some superglue into it for a bit more security. Wouldn't recommend it for blue water type fish but for anything here in the UK it's more than adequate.
