i am in the market for my first speargun. i live in north idaho so i would be spearfishing in freshwater lakes most of the time. visibility is pretty good up here. ive been looking around the internet and ive narrowed my choices down to the OMER cayman or the rabitech hunter. they are roughly the same price and i can get same sizes as well. any advice would be helpful, thanks.

You can't go wrong any of them,, just get whatever you like, or get both in different size rofl I personelly would get rabi..
cheers,

I just bought a cayman 90 and love it. The only gripe i have is the safety is small so you have to check it out for yourself (not sure how Rabi is). It isnt a problem for me with thin gloves, but you should still look at it to decide for your self. Make sure that you handle both and check the pull on them (don't load it out of water, but it is still nice to get a sense of how it will feel in your chest as you pull). DiversDirect.com sells OMER and price matches, so check around to get the best deal you can (and maybe %10 cheaper after price match)! Where are you at/diving in Idaho? I am from Seattle and used to live in Kennewick, WA as well?
PS my vote is for the OMER

The most important thing is your hunting ability not the guns so don't get stressed out with choosing between the two. Either gun will serve you well. If you can get two guns for different visibilities.

i dont really have a chance to try any out cause there really arent that many spearfishers up here. there are only two dive shops and only one of them caries spearguns, and those are JBLs. buuut i am located inbetween clark fork and sandpoint idaho in a town called hope. right on lake pend oreille, and that is also where i will be doing almost all of my diving/spearfishing

You just opened up pandora's box lol Omer vs Rabi I love omer finns, suits, masks, knifes but im married to my Rabitech's Ace for firepower, acuracy durability. But its all about prefrence.

If you check the Omer site - the cayman has one of the lightest triggers on the market. The grip is the nicest I've ever handled - particularly with the custom grip. They are very light and agile guns.

Everyone,

There is another option here as well. Nobody has brought up Rob Allen for fear of bringing in another brand name into the discussion and possibly confusing TOOmas, but these railguns are easily available, are excellent guns, and easy on the wallet (if you have a good connection ;) ).

Six weeks ago I sold a Rob Allen 140cm Signature Carbon to someone and one week ago that gun helped him take fourth place in the 2007 US National Spearfishing Championships.

:)

Jimdoe is right there are many other options. For instance you could buy a Dessault or say Beauchat both good French guns. Get a gun that not going to break the bank and just go spearfishing as much as you can. If you haven't already buy a custom wetsuit as that will keep you much happier in the water then any speargun.

Jim what was he using a 140 cm for in NorCal? I have heard to shoot these long Rob Allens right you have to use a two hand pistol grip.

Either or. It depends on how strong you are and what you are using for bands. Those 7mm 170cm shafts are a lot of mass to launch quickly. Then again I'm not a giant guy and I shoot my 120 guns one handed easily.

:)

well after looking around online and reading some reviews i went w/ a 70cm rob allen tuna. i should have it in roughly a week and ill post something after i use it.

Can you really shoot tuna with a 70cm gun?

Mr. John Travolta,

The tuna found off the coast of Idaho are much smaller. Similiar to the tuna found off the sunny beaches of Oxford and Northampton!!

:)

roflWell, you probably could shoot tuna with a 70cm Rob Allen tuna gun -- but I'm sure there are much better ways! The Tuna model is the variant that comes with 2x16mm rubber bands & 7.5mm spear (good for big fish in poor viz?):

Spearfishing and freediving products.

I like my Rob Allen -- rugged. The new Vecta handle looks & feels good too.

BTW re. the safety catch comment early. In a thread about safety's a while back, concensus seemed to be that most of us never use them because they are not really safe -- loose bands being the only truely safe state (& even then, watch where you stick the pointy end;)).

Back to the original question; rabitech or cayman HF?

Well as members here said; both are wonderful guns. I havent laid my hands on a cayman HF but I just ordered one recently and its coming soon, whereas I shot and tried rabitech guns b4.

I believe the rabitech is more toughly rigged than cayman hf (comes with 20mm band and 7mm spear) and I also like the way the circular rubber inserts in the muzzle which even increases the accuracy of this gun.

For cayman HF, it is also a wonderful gun; with its 6.3mm spear and circular 18mm band; u cant go wrong with it, and a 100cm gun still gives u plenty of range. Also the hydrofomed aluminium barrel is very stiff, and the trigger mechanism is pretty tough too, and can safely take up to 2*18mm bands I guess for future upgrades. Omer shafts I guess come to a maximum sizes of 6.5mm, but cayman HF can easily take the 7.1mm euro riffe shaft (if like u plan to use it with 2*18mm bands). But after all, I guess the cayman HF gun was designed for usage with smaller games than as with the rabitech guns (like something up to 20kg). But as other members said, you can't go wrong with any of them, and at the end it all depends on which of those guns will fit u more. So try them both and see which one fits your hands more, and have available replaceable parts in your country

best regards and have safe dives
