Omer XXV Speargun + Other Fast tracking guns?

Don't use it! they are just a cause of tangles, i removed mine a while back and don't miss it. The spear is direct to the reel.

Hi Azapa
Im not sure how that would work with the xxv as the mono has to head up towards the muzzle of the gun from the line release so the reel line has to be coming from the muzzle end if you see what I mean.... kinda difficult to explain...

Chris

do you mean the "bridge" that changes between open and closed muzzles? Or the little guide that the line might go through from the reel? You probably should just grab the gun and take it to a spearo shop, they will show you the alternatives to rig. Either way, i can guarantee you that your gun will work fine spear to reel direct.

Azapa
Sorry I probably didnt explain it very well but its tricky without pics. I am sure a direct line would work perfectly but as I have a open muzzle set up on the gun there is nowhere for the mono to hook over at the muzzle in order to return back up to the reel line. Sorry I dont really know how to explain it!
cheers

Hey Chris, there IS a way to hook it round, I bet, you'll just have to look. The line from your spear sits alongside the spear, under the wishbones, at the muzzle there will be a little piece of plastic or metal that you can cross over the spear and go back upon (to the line release). Have a good look at the attached, your's will be way fancier though! But its the idea.

Take care.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the pics. I see on that you've returned the mono back over the hook for the open muzzle for a double wrap thats all I needed to see.

Azapa my gun is rigged just like that pic thanks it was just that if you run the line straight from the open muzzle to the reel then you lose 2x barrel length of range which I was trying to avoid.

Thanks for the help everyone, but I would like to try it with the line guide at the muzzle so if anyone knows where you might be able to get them from?

Cheers

Chris

Apnea.co.uk stocks Omer gear in Britain. You may ask them to order the spare piece from Omer for you. But it will take time, maybe money too, and installing it will be whole another story.
Do it yourself with a paper holder. Low tech solutions are the cheapest and safest sometimes.

Hey Chris, although you are free to try, I doubt a "double wrap" will be worthwhile on your gun. They just seem to cause a mess and watching the spear drop to the ocean floor is not much use. IMHO, your millage may vary ;)

Hi Azapa
Thats why Im trying to get this line clip so I dont have to have a double wrap.
Cheers

Thanks for all the ideas everyone I will try making my own I think I have some stainless steel wire tucked away somewhere

Cheers

I'm puzzled why you consider this a problem.I have this gun & I believe the piece you are refering too is the metal guide under the muzzle that the line from the reel goes through? Whether you do single or double wrap you just hook the line around the plastic hook on the muzzle. Some spearos dont use the guide at all.As for single or double wrap.In UK water I think you are better with single wrap. Its quicker to reload sometimes giving you a chance at a second fish in the shoal.

Funny that you used that hook for the wrap, with my cayman HF, I used to have terrible tangling problems, when I've used that hook, I've changed to using the front of the muzzle instead.

Do you ever get tangle shots ?

I've never had a tangle firing my XXV even with the double wrap although of course with 15feet of mono in the water after firing there's some potential then for a tangle. I use 160lb mono.

I do like the side lever release down at the handle end as I can wind the shooting line from the spear immediately under the lever. This clears the notches in the spear and make it much easier to load the wishbone onto it. I was not sure this would release cleanly but it's never been a problem :).

Dave , I was going to ask you about this , I worried the friction from the release might hinder the mono in some way , glad to hear that it doesn't .
I tried a different method and drilled a small hole on the lefthand side of the barrel , inserting a peg , leaving just two or three mm projecting . This provides a ' catch ' to pull the line out of the way for loading and unloading the gun , otherwise the wishbone tends to kink the mono . The gun will fire OK with the line under the peg but I prefer to unhook it , just in case .
On my gun I've gone back to the screw-in rubbers , too many shots going high with the circular bands , love the band-lifters , an inspired idea I might try and copy .
Just to add the XXV Gold is a superb gun , once you're used to it .

Regards ,
Dave .

It's a shame that the line release is on the right but the front pin for the crossover on the spear is on the left. That means the first Half wrap crosses over the spear from right rear to left front. That's about all I'd change on the XXV. You listening Mr Omer? Well maybe just one more point the line release is too sharp edged as it comes from the factory and damages the mono. You need to use a small file to smooth them off.

I also dont't use a bungee as I find with 2 wraps the mono stretches enough to provide good tension. With one wrap you might need a bungee. With the 2 wraps and no bungee you can maintain that clean and very, very lean front end. Tracking heaven.

Dave.

Dave, how about little pointed "caps" on your risers to eliminate the potential side drag of those cups? I wonder if you have strong cross currents in Guernsey? Lovely job BTW.

The cross current here knocks me over, fins over head, sometimes, and I always think that everyone else must dive in the same....

Since those pictures I have refined the design a bit and now the lifters are smaller and neater while still doing the same job.

In the Channel Islands we have some of the biggest (over 10 metre rise and fall) and some of the fastest tide rips in the world. We work around them, fishing the slack waters or drifting with the flow.

Dave.
