Hi Folks,

We are planning a family holiday to the Orkney & Shetland this summer.

ORKNEY: We’ve dived the Borough of Deerness and the Barriers to South Ronaldsay many times before; but do any of the locals know of other good sites that are well sheltered and have something special about them? Been to Yesnabby but never dived it.

SHETLAND: Uncharted territory! Any advice on good sites from the locals?

Any advice welcomed, thanks,
Ben

Hi, I live in Shetland can i ask what sort of diving you want to do? Scuba, snorkelling, freediving, spearfishing?
Basically you can view the sea from just about anywhere in Shetland so if the wind is blowing say from the south you head to the opposite side of the island being the North end and you will get a more sheltered dive as Shetland is not as flat as Orkney so the hills provide a good wind break.

There are so many places you could dive from and the options are just endless as not all of Shetlands beaches are listed on the websites below.

Thanks for the response & links. We will likely be just freediving in Orkney & Shetland.

Jarlshof is a Prehistoric and Norse settlement so a significant place in Shetland and there are beaches close by.

Scatness broch again with beaches close by

St.Ninians which has the biggest Tombolo in the UK. Probably not a place to dive but a place of significance all the same (St. Ninians treasure or as my nephew calls it Treasure Island lol)

And Mousa Broch is definitely worth just going to see whilst you are up here (The link says best preserved in Scotland but as they were only built in Scotland then it is the best preserved Broch in the world)

I personally have not dived near all the sites above but i have dived off the last one many times ,fished for Sea Trout, kayaked and walked the dog over the site before the site was found as i was brought up there. It is also a well sheltered spot if it is not too windy as is with any dive site.
