Hi all,

First post

I'm new to freediving, 39 yrs old and my 3yr old daughter has a better breath hold during her tantrums than I do in full relaxation at this stage....

Anyway...

Has anyone got some advice on out of water physical conditioning that I could do. Any specific gym exercises, types of yoga classes, stretches, endurance activities etc...etc...

I'll continue to trawl the forum and pick up previously posted advice. Any direct links posted will be appreciated

A.

Apnea walking might be a good start. Just go for a walk and hold you breath for as long as yu can, then breathe for 30 seconds or a minute and do it again. By the end of 30 minutes you should be holding for much longer than you started with.

Aside from that, any exercise will help. It should include both aerobic (walking, running, swimming, cycling for endurance, like an hour at a time for fast walking, or 30 minutes at a run, not slow jog) and anerobic (exercises that cause a burn in the affected muscles like weight lifting, wind sprints and similar) exercises.

You might want to wait for yoga breathing or other more advanced activities like O2 and CO2 tables (search for either) until you feel your conditioning is paying off. otherwise you may be trying to take on too much at once.

Concentration and flexibility exercises come to mind.

Also learning how to breath - from the belly, will help a lot.

Auto gen relaxation - self relaxation, is also a great practice for beginners.

Reading in how to meditate, and trying it out.

Onto the physical again.
I think Hteas already made some excellent suggestions.
In addition to his, maintain a journal. Make sure you eat and drink well right after the exercise. Monitor and observe yourself and allow yourself enough time to rest, adapt and grow.

Above all, make every session fun and interesting, as to remind ourselves what we like so much about freediving.

Love , Courage and water,

Kars

ps. I'm watching non violent communication at the moment and it's really interesting to see how much better I and many others we can communicate and avoid needless struggles for power over others. Maybe it has some useful ideas about tantrums?
