Last week I was doing dry statics at my computer. The max for this series of 8 breath holds was 4:00 minutes, which I had done before in a pool. This time, however, I 'packed' my lungs with around 5 xtra sips of air just before breath hold #6....
I remember trying to get up off the floor but my head kept banging into the bottom of my bedframe, as my bed is next to my computer. When it stopped, I calmly thought to myself that I had just had a convulsion. I was not droopy, foggy or anything other than feeling normal. I checked the elapsed time and found I had went down around 10 seconds into the hold.

Now, a week later I did the same series of 8 and again convulsed. This time my wife saw it. She said my head was banging over and over again into the keyboard. I could hear her yelling my name but could not lift my head without it crashing back down. I came out of it fine again but a little spooked.

I believe it was the combonation of 1. Hyperventilation in the last 20 secs before starting these breatholds, and 2. Packing the xtra 5-6 more breaths on top of already full lungs caused them to press into my hearts left ventricl, resulting in reduced bloodflow/02 to my brain. The two things in tandem spelled 'whiteout, or convulsions.' I came to this conclusion based on the fact that I have been doing Apnea tables for over a year with zero problems, yet the two time I throw PACKING into the mix I go into convulsions 1/2 way through the table.Packing may be fine for most, but this practice, along with hyperventalation, are now out for me. I am going to train for lowering the heart rate and continued C02 tolerance training on a single, deep breath.

You had a packing LMC (Loss of Motor Control) or blackout. It's a reasonably well-known phenomenon and you're right in that hyperventilation is a contributory factor. Some people are more suceptible to packing blackouts than others; it seems you're one of these.

I think there are a few lessons here for you. First, packing (especially dry) causes cardiac pressure and can cause you in particular to suffer from cerebral hypoxia. Don't. Second, hyperventilation is not a good idea. Read threads on it elsewhere on the board. Third, when doing dry statics use a place where a blackout results in a soft landing. Sitting or lying in bed is what you should be thinking.

Thanks. I will be doing bloodwork to rule out any potential contributing factos and also will do a MRI/MRA if it happens again during a normal, non-packing, non hyperventilating breath hold (fingers crossed). I also am looking at doing the PFI classes in Vancouver, Canada this June to further my training.

These two episodes have made me keenly aware that I need to be very careful in how I 'Breath Up' before a dive and to be sure and follow all safety protocols, i.e surface interval. This was a real wake up call.

Jenny, I spoke to Kirk at PFI yesterday and he said they just are in the process of opening a June class in Vancouver. I am signed for the Sept. class but am going to move up to June.
