Hey guys I'm brand new to this, I just watched "Into the Blue" and I really want to be able to dive without scuba. I also surf so it would be very beneficial to learn these techniques. Anyways, everyone talks about packing, is that packing air in the lungs somehow or is that in the cheeks? Thanks for all your help... any other techniques for a beginner would be great

Packing is using the cheeks to push more air into the lungs then you can normally take in with a single breath. It is not a beginner technique and can cause blackouts. I would learn how to freedive without packing first then learn it. You should focus on equalization first, getting depth, and a higher static breath hold time. If you worry about learning too many things at a time you won't progress as fast.

Packing is an advanced technique primarily used for deep dives to make compensation easier. Therefore, it is unnecessary for beginners.

If you are beginner, I'd suggest you to try improving your static using O2/CO2 tables, improve your finning style, and read a LOT of threads on this forum. Also, AIDA F** course would be beneficial.

All of your questions are probably answered on this forum, but if you're in doubt, ASK!!! ;)

Enjoy!

Another thing on the short list for beginners:
Try finding a diving partner, essential for any wet action and you will learn tons from them.
You are definitely not the only freediver from TX, try running a search/looking at the appropriate section.

Agree that packing isn't useful for beginners. It can increase your total breathold, but it doesn't reduce the urge to breathe at all. ie if you feel like you have to breathe after 1 minute, it will be the same with packing. So it's only useful for people able to push to their limits anyway.

I use packing for training and comps but don't use it for recreational diving or spearfishing. Doing repetitive and/or shallow dives it just takes more effort because the increased bouyancy, also too much hassle to turn onto my back to pack.

Cheers,
Wal

You mean "Into the Blue"? I didn't see it :(
I'm so busy with job and studying, that I can't even find some time for a good nap :head Haven't seen pool for weeks!!!
Visiting DB is like lighting a cigarette, short relief from this cr*py period of my life :)
