Hello Siam,
i m just back from a 45 days trip so i,m just reading yr post.and i might be helpful in yr choice of guns.
as we are ``Pro`` spear fishermen and also i am also custom spearguns builder myself, we,me and my partner, owns around ? 30 + spearguns each and we DID test, owned,or tried ,most from what are on the market today
except from seasniper..that i will order one asap.
about 1.7 m barrel ..i built one off in using an ``EDGE`` special ordered aluminum barrel..it is load with a 2,2 M 7mm shaft and a single 18 mm rubber.
we use it some times but it is more for fun than for being really efficient..
the ``Kanji`` 1.7 m barrel should be deliver with an 8 mm shaft and 3 rubbers..this means the gun will be quite heavy in water because of the ratio from barrel size and shaft weight..(i recently received 3 pelaj 1.1 and 1.2 m with 6.5 and 7 mm shaft)
and his maneuverability would be difficult..and tiring..
the Riffe `metal tech`` ..i received one from the first made MT5 ? same as island size with an ``enclosed track``
this gun is also bit heavy..not good maneuverable ,and the ``closed track`` was -at this time - a pure SH##T- but may be they improved since , and an open track would be better choice in case..!!
For yr sailfishes hunting purposes..you really do not need a Hugh power gun except for the range ..the sail are so flat..and are not big fighters..
can shoot them with a good reel gun..and a 7 mm hawaian shaft ..but it is always easyer with a float line /bungee and 1 or 2 floats. such as riffe inflatable or Rob Allen 35 liters inflatable or else good floats = ``ORCA`` hard foam floats.
for Marlin it is different.. and if you want to land any over 70 kgs..and specially some up to 200 kgs ..(we land an unofficial record of a 320 kgs black one)!!!
Everything must be think and over sized!!
and `Big` guns are the best..even if some in SA landed some few nice big Marlins with a ``normal`` gun after hours of fight ..you can consider it is
an achievement from spear fishing but it is including LOTS of LUCK,and risks (to my opinion)..
so for such best choice are : Steve Alexander Tuna gun
Merlo tuna gun
Collins tuna gun
and certainly few others such as Seasniper customs..,Matt alexander wood and not carbon core model.
about what to choose for the best realistic compromise =
quality/price/range/power/maneuverability/ no problems after few years utilisation..
i would suggest you another `brand` to consider:
EDGE spearguns from Australia.
very good aluminum barrels..not flexing because 28.4 mm Inside diameter with 1,8 mm wall thickness.
can be loaded with 2 x 17 or 18 mm rubbers (stock are 2 x 16mm)
or i made a prototype with open muzzle and 3x 14 mm rubbers on an 1.3 m barrel with an 8 mm shaft with fins and slip tip...
are not heavy maneuverability and not tiring guns to hold all day long.
With a 7mm shaft.. with an 8 mm it start to be heavyer..
the best lenghts would be a 1.4 M with a 1,9 m shaft or a 1,5m with a 2,0 m shaft..(south african shaft)
SuperFrog - Offshore Spearfishing and Freediving
then even better would be same in CF heavy duty radially wound 2,0 mm thick..but this increasing price..
Those Carbon fibers barrels are the one I personally worked on to be the best possible compromise for a light /powerful/speargun..and now Tony Heugh from Edge is offering guns with 1 carbon fiber quality same as mine.
..
so this what could be said on this matter from my side.
if you need any other advice do not hesitate..
all the bests
regards
marco
