Thought it might be a good idea to start a Tips and Tricks thread to use as a resource for those keen to overhaul or restore their pneumatic gun.
Removing stuck parts
One of the primary needs IMO is how to free up components that may be 'frozen' in place... muzzles and valve bodies spring to mind!
I've had good results to free a stuck muzzle housing by alternately soaking in boiling water, drying off and plunging into a can of Ed's Red while hot then putting in deep freeze for an hour... then back in boiling water. The expansion and contraction seems to crack the hard white corrosion and allow the solvent to penetrate.
Cleaning barrel bores
To remove hard caked on residue in a 13mm bore (incl abraded rubber seal material stuck to the wall) I've found a 28 gauge shotgun brass cleaning brush soaked with Ed's Red works well. The brass brush is a firm fit and will dislodge debris without scratching the aluminium.
Wet well, push the brush up the bore once, let sit for 30 mins, swab out and repeat.
Makeup removal pads nicked from your better half fit perfectly
Ed's Red is a Witches Brew comprising equal parts of:
It is very searching and will creep into tiny thread gaps, dissolve hardened goop and lubricate to ease removal.
A pickle in 1:1 white vinegar and warm water for 15 mins will remove most white calcite deposits then follow up with ultrasonic cleaning.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
A 1:10 solution of Simple Green Crystal at 60C for 30 mins is very effective at clearing threads, muzzle blocks and other more intricate parts.
Any more contributions from the more experienced restorers and repairers?
